Photographs and postcards sent to Prof. Alfred O’Rahilly by the Imperial War Museum, London, England, for use in his book on Fr Willie Doyle SJ. Includes a note ‘Don’t mix these with the others. Return these to me. These are photos which I bought but decided not to use.’ All photographs are dated and described on back. Photos are mostly of the ruins of Ypres, Guillemont, Loos etc. Sizes: 21 1/2cm x 16 1/2cm; 14cm x 9cm and 27 1/2cm x 9cm.

Holograph letters by Fr Willie Doyle SJ from his time with the 8th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers, 49th Brigade, 16th Division and the 8th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusilier’s: at Whitely Camp, Surrey; Bordon Camp, Hampshire; various locations in France. In the main, the letters are addressed to his father, but also his sister Mai. The letters document his time as a military chaplain, firstly at camp in England while preparing for embarkation and secondly, at the front in France. Includes opening entry - ‘My dear Father, When I posted my letter to you this morning it occurred to me that perhaps if I kept a kind of diary for the next couple of weeks it might interest you and others, even if I had nothing of very great interest to relate (31 March 1916).

• refers to the masses sent to him by Rev. Tuite SJ, ‘I am writing for a fresh supply - As I say all the masses primarily for your intentions now...I get through their number quickly...’. Refers to the Bank shares remarking ‘I had a note from Fr. Greene desiring to have the Bank Shares transferred to Railway Stock...I am quite willing that he should do with them whatever he thinks best.’ (15 February 1882, 3pp).

Includes a letter in which Fr Cullen remarks ‘If I might have a month or five weeks for vacation...I would prize it as it might strengthen my body and soul.’. Continues ‘I am very anxious for many reasons that my noviceship should be on the continent.’ (2 June 1881, 4pp). Includes a letter to Rev Tuite SJ thanking him for organising a place in the Novitiate of Arlon, Belgium (14 July 1881, 4pp).

Medal of the Order of the Crown (Ordre de la Couronne), class Officier, conferred by the King of Belgium to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ. Includes official document concerning the decoration (6 May 1919) and letter from the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs (22 May 1919). The medal in case, with name of Fernanrd Heremans, Schaerbeek, is a five-armed white enamel and silver-gilt Maltese cross with silver-gilt graduated rays between the arms, on green enamel oval laurel wreath suspension; the face with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the gilt crown of Belgium; the reverse with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the cipher of King Leopold II, founder of the Order. Announces the names of those who have gone to Tronchiennes that year. Reports on his own activities and on Tullabeg. Also refers to the Repeal campaign. Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

Reports at length on the death of Fr John O'Connor SJ, who died following an accident on the road from Naas. Also reports that Fr Bracken was succeeded a few days previously by Fr St Leger as Vice Provincial, and refers to others of the community also.

Describes Academy Day, on which some of the scholars who are leaving the school perform and recite. Explains that he is down in Cork on family and other business. Refers to the opening of Belvedere the following September. Asks about members of the community in Louvain. Announces that Fr Peter Kenney SJ is to go to Rome.

Letter from Fr John Grene SJ, Clongowes, to l’Abbé McDonald, [Fr John MacDonald SJ], Louvain. Reports on the opening of Belvedere House, and on Fr Kenney’s progress on his way to Rome. Praises the students at Clongowes, and refers to new arrangements made for the Prefectship. Reports on other events involving the Community and the school, including the opening of the Debating Society, and a visit by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daniel O’Connell.

Gives news from Clongowes in relation to both the Community and school, including the progress of the Sodality, plays staged by the students, a meet of the provincial consultors etc. Also reports on Gardiner Street; the progress of building work in St Francis Xavier Church, and the Community there.
Also reports on political and social issues, including Daniel O’Connell’s activities in relation to Repeal, the campaign against landlords, the Lord Lieutenant’s policies, Peel’s new taxes. Refers to Belvedere, which he visited on a recent trip to Dublin, as ‘a splendid Mansion’. Also refers to a letter received from ‘Mr. Cooper of Calcutta’, which gives news of that part of the world.

A file of material collected by Fr John Grene SJ on the life of Mr James Murphy SJ, a scholastic who drowned whilst on villa (holiday) at Poulaphuca, County Wicklow. The contributors provide information of his life as a student at Clongowes Wood College and later as a novice in the Society.

Also grants permission for the Association of the Tabernacle and Poor Churches to be affiliated to the main association in Brussels.

Letter from Mr Patrick Tighe SJ, Maison St Augustin, Enghien to Fr William Kane SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin thanking him for his letter and apologising for the delay in replying. Asks for news from Ireland. Remarks that he is very happy living in France and recounts news of the Irish Brothers studying there reporting that all are very happy. Remarks '..you have experienced the genuine charity of our French brothers, it makes me very glad to have the opportunity of making part at least of one's studies abroad (4pp)'.
