‘Visitations 1859 - 1961’’ to St Ignatius, Galway

Notebook with handwritten entries written by the Irish Fr Provincials on completing his annual visitation of the Galway residences. The first entry is by the Vice Provincial, Joseph Lentaigne. At the beginning of the notebook, a financial status is outlined for the
residences in Galway as they returned to Galway in 1859. The Provincials’ notes on their visitations refer to the physical and spiritual state of the college, house and church finances, and the observance of regulations; such as the pealing of bells and the non playing by the boys in certain areas. The community are commended for their successes with regard to religious observance, house regulations etc., and recommendations for improvements are made also. (In Latin and English).

With index at the front and hand-drawn plan of reconstruction of organ (30 September 1926) and schedule of works to be completed by Telford & Telford, Organ Builders, 33 Charlemont Street, Dublin for the ‘cleaning and overhauling of organ in Ignatian Chapel, St Francis Xavier’s, Gardiner Street, Dublin (11 July 1944).

The notebook in fact contains other notes including copies of letters to Irish Fr Provincial and notes relating to other communities in Australia e.g. Sevenhills, St Francis Xavier's College, Kew, Richmond Parish, St. Kilda House, Riverview. (3 November 1870 - [ ] January 1883, ca. 60pp). Includes notes on Sir Edward Strickland compiled by Fr Dalton SJ (1 March 1899, 2pp).

Notebooks concerning the workings and the measurements of ‘The O'Leary Seismograph’ at Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin. The first notebook (1946-1957) includes diagrams and details of the pendulum, suspension: trifilar workings of the seismograph. Includes inserts: ‘Fr M Murphy was present and helped erect the pendulum. He was in Rathfarnham, for (at worst) October 1916 to September 1917. Fr Hayes was also present. Fr O'Connell says 1915 work was started’; note from Fr Richard Ingram SJ to Mr Patrick Heelan SJ inviting him to measure the static mag. of O’Leary’. The second notebook records the measurements of the seismograph at Rathfarnham Castle (4 January 1948-May 1953). It has the names of Jesuit Juniors John Moore, Michael Kelly, Hubert Delaney, Albert Diviney and Paul McShane. Notebooks found in the basement (villa room) of Milltown Park, 2014.
