A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Clongowes refused to pay the principal sum or the interest Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Rector, Fr James Corboy SJ, Mungret College remarking that he has instructed Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector of Clongowes to pay £332.15.4 to Mungret. Remarks that Fr General decided that Clongowes should pay half the interest due on the debt and '…put an end finally to all disputes about the debt.' (25 June 1917, 2pp).

Apart from considerations of poverty, I cannot see that the closing of Emo is any occasion for festivity. After all, Emo is being closed because God does not see fit to bless the Province as at present being run with sufficient vocations to justify keeping it open.' (27 August 1969, 3pp). States in his letter ‘Dont fail to read 'The Clongownian'. You will be amazed to read about your younger brother as indeed he was to read about himself.…I suspect who wrote it but I am not quite certain. It is artistically done but much over laudatory. You cried when I returned to the world but Providence decreed otherwise for there were many family matters that required my special attention. Just think I entered my 73rd year on last Monday. Oh how short they appear now!’

Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.

Remarks 'Something depends on the age of the children. The eldest girl, being fit for school is probably old enough to be in danger of becoming a thorough Protestant under the mother's care.' Continues 'He (William Bliss) ought without delay to appoint a testamentary guardian and to take care the document is all right in it's form and execution....'.

Remarks that he and others are confused '...on account of this Roman Rescript on the Veto.' Continues 'It is considered here that the treatment was most contemptible to the Irish Bishops, Clergy and people.' Refers to Fr St Leger's family who '...are teasing me to write to you to know do you expect him. The Bishop told me it would be well to know as if there was no expectation of him that the matter should be broken to his poor mother.'
