Includes letters from Joshua Clarke, J Clarke & Sons, Stain glass manufacturers & Church decorators, 33 North Frederick Street, Dublin regarding the ceiling painting by 'my lady artist' (Miss Crilly, later known as Margaret Clarke) (10 September 1913). Only one painting by Margaret Crilly was accepted, which disappointed Joshua Clarke. Initially Miss Crilly rejected the offer of £7 10 shlllings per painting. Joshua Clarke persuaded her to accept £7, but by this stage, it was too late. She received £10 for her painting and Cambridge & Co. Ltd, Dublin were engaged (October 1913), and agreed a price of £35 for the series of nine painting. The artist Patrick Tuohy completed the ceiling paintings.

File of postcards and notes from the artist, Evie Hone to Fr Daniel Shields SJ (29 September 1941-11 August 1952) in which pleasantries are given and items of news, ‘I expect you heard that Michael Healy died last Mon. I feel very sad for myself but he could not have recovered to work’ (29 September 1941). Evie Hone writes from Kilkenny, Paris and Rathfarnham, Dublin. This material was found in the room of Fr Daniel Shields SJ after his death. Includes a newspaper cutting with an image of Evie Hone and her last stained-glass window, an obituary and a colour sketch of Mary and Child, by Evie Hone.

Mr J T Gwynn was the uncle of Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ and had been headmaster of the Protestant Preparatory School at Baymount. Madame Chaponniére-Chaix doesn’t believe that the time is right for a Red Cross mission to Ireland (26 January 1923);

  • leaflet entitled ‘The extreme penalty’ which details the words of Mr Eamon Aylward in relation to his involvement in disturbances in Kilkenny "The extreme penalty”: Mr. Eamon Aylward, in the document with his signature attached which has been found upon an irregular captured by the Kilkenny force, has lighted up, as by a lightning flash, the criminality of the militarist attack upon the people...but that such an order could be issued by a man blaspheming the honourable name of Irish Republican will reveal to the people the tyranny that they have escaped (1922);

Includes a letter from Tom Bacon, Solicitor (acting on behalf of the Jesuit Fathers), 9 Clare Street, Dublin to Fr McDonald SJ Remarks 'This matter has taken a new and interesting turn... Mr Beausang (Dublin Corporation).. .explained his predicament. Apparently in his final anxiety to get the work through he agreed our terms without obtaining any additional estimates as to the cost... Mr Beausang states that there is a deficiency of at least £7,000...There is no fund out of which this deficiency can be met...Mr Beausang's first suggestion was that the Jesuit Fathers would make a grant to the corporation of half the increased cost namely £3,500. When he was told that this was out of the question it was then suggested that you might disclaim the acquisition money £2,000.' (11 October 1956, 3pp).

A file relating to 'St Stephen's', the magazine of the University College, Dublin and the Catholic University School of Medicine, Cecilia Street, Dublin and the removal of the medallion from the cover of the magazine, and insertion of the Catholic University of Ireland. Includes a letter from Joseph Brennan, Honorary Secretary to the Representative Council, Catholic University School of Medicine to Fr William Delany SJ referring to the medallion. Remarks, ‘..it was not their (the Representative Council) intention to substitute a medallion of the Catholic University for the existing medallion. Their object simply was to remove the false impression conveyed by the wording of the medallion, that the magazine belonged exclusively or mainly to the students of University College, and was not the joint organ of the students of University College and of the Catholic University School of Medicine.’ (22 March 1906, 2pp). Fr William Delany SJ established St Stephen's, as a magazine for University College, Dublin, and not for the Catholic University of Ireland. Includes list of subscribers to 'St. Stephen's' (March 1906) and accounts (1905-06).
