Includes a letter from Fr John MacErlean SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin to the Irish Fr Provincial concerning protests against altering the Custom Book. Remarks 'I put in (a notebook) everything that came into my head that might be made use of in building up our protest.' (10 April 1940, 1p). Letter from Fr Pierre-Jean de Smet of the Missouri Province to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Writes from Brussels, thanking Fr Walsh for his kindness to him and towards the Missouri Province. Refers to his departure for America at the end of the following month, and states his intention of going to Anvers in the meantime. Asks his addressee to tell the Rector at Milltown Park that the Procurator of the Belgian Province in Brussels has credited him (de Smet) with the £8 stg, with which he had been entrusted. Refers also to the necessary expenses to be incurred for the American candidates.

Letter from Fr Jean-Pierre de Smet SJ in Anvers (Antwerp) to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Refers to his (de Smet’s) imminent departure for St Louis. States that the third candidate, recommended by Fr Walsh, and examined recently, is to be admitted. Thanks him for the great interest he takes in the Missouri Province.

A file of letters concerning the Dromore property (Loyola House) belonging to the Society of Jesus. At the time the Jesuits were not occupying Dromore, but leasing the land for grazing. The estate was eventually sold in 1918. Includes a note, written on the back of an Income Tax Assessment form, concerning the names vested in the Dromore estate.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to Dr Goethals, a bishop in Calcutta, who runs a newspaper there. Discusses the question of the ‘Dublin College’ and Fr Delany's involvement in the matter. Refers to the negative attitude of Cardinal McCabe to the latter, and to his (Delany's) extravagant tendencies in relation to the College. Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Milltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Asks if he has heard anything about the terna from Australia.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Letter from Maxwell and Weldon, 37 North Great Georges Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial Aloysius Sturzo SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin concerning structural work being carried out at Killiney Castle.

Letter from Fr John Grene SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin to Mr Higgin (the purchaser of Killiney Castle from the Society of Jesus) concerning the payment of income tax on Killiney Castle. Refers to the house insurance premium which requires Mr Higgin’s name to be put on the policy.

The papers of Milltown Park concern the Jesuit community (1861-1979) and works which have occurred there: Tabor House (1969-1993); The Milltown Institute (1968-1992) and The Irish School of Ecumenics (1969-1980). There are references to the missions, chaplaincy, villas, finances, customs, property retreats, library, customs, rules, studies, health, staff, ordinations, the establishment and eventual closure of a retreat centre at Tabor House, the foundation of courses in theology and philosophy for the training of religious and lay people, Milltown Lectures (1960-1970), Lay Retreat Association and the establishment of the Irish School of Ecumenics.

Material is in the form of handwritten letters, ledgers, postcards, accounts, architectural plans, cuttings from newspapers, maps, photographs, menus, bills and receipts.

A file relating to the establishment of a summer school of Irish for Jesuits and discussions concerning where the summer school should be located.
