Letters from Cardinal William Conway, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, and from Dr James Fergus, Bishop of Achonry and Secretarius of the Irish Hierarchy, to Irish Fr Provincial Brendan Barry SJ in relation to a letter sent to the Irish Bishops seeking their views about how best the Society of Jesus is to serve the Church in Ireland. Dr Fergus expresses the opinion of the Bishops by writing, ‘..the Society could render no better service…than by a continuance and intensification of the activities in which it is at present engaged, having perhaps as a special aim the cultivation of a sense of social responsibility among the laity’ (16 October 1967).

File of correspondence relating to the possibility of assistance being provided to save a Jesuit mission in Baghdad by members of the Irish Province. Includes letters between Irish Provincials Brendan Barry and Cecil McGarry and Fr John J. Donohue SJ, Superior of the Iraq Mission, St Joseph’s Residence, Baghdad, and Fr William G. Guindon SJ, Provincial of the New England Province of the Society.

A file relating to the Foundation Fund established for Studies. Includes memoranda explaining the origins of the Foundation Fund. Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Brendan Barry SJ, 85 Eglinton Road, Dublin 4 to Fr Séan Ó Catháin SJ (Fr. Superior), 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin concerning shares in the Educational Company of Ireland that were settled on Fr Connolly in 1914 (then the Editor of Studies) as a foundation for Studies. Asks that this foundation be kept separate from the assets of 35 Lower Leeson Street (3 July 1968, 1p).

Fr William White SJ went to Manhasset, New York, in 1971, to study marriage counsellling and he became one of the pioneers of Marriage Encounter in Ireland, being its director from 1974 until 1982. Fr BrendAN Woods SJ worked for Marriage Encounter for thirteen years, working closely with Bill White SJ. Brendan was the organizer, Bill was the inspirer; as in many unexpected pairings, they were a very successful team.
