Account of the funeral of the Countess of Portarlington, taken from the 'Leinster Express'. Lady Portarlington was buried at Emo Park, Queen’s County (Laois). Includes references to Frs Robert Carbery and William Delaney.

The Countess was buried in the graveyard beside the church, and a memorial to her was also erected in Coolbanagher church by her sister the Duchess of Marlborough.

Emo Court, County Laois was under Jesuit ownership from 1930 until 1969. Now in the hands of the Office of Public Works, the history of Emo dates back to the Earls of Portarlington in the eighteenth century. The first earl, John Dawson, commissioned the building of Emo Court in 1790; it is one of only a few private houses designed by the architect James Gandon. The Portarlington’s sold Emo in 1920 to the Land Commission and the Jesuits purchased the property in 1930, to be used as a novitiate (house of first formation). The Jesuits found Emo in a dilapidated state, with grass growing up through the floorboards. They made significant structural changes in order for it to function as a novitiate rather than as a family home. Many items were removed however they were stored in the basement (fireplace wrapped in blankets). Renowned photographer, Fr Frank Browne SJ, was one of the first Jesuits to take up residence there and he took many photographs of Emo Court.

In 1969, the Jesuits sold Emo to Major Cholmeley Dering Cholmeley-Harrison. He restored the house, sparing no expense, and donated it to the Irish State in 1995. In 2012 the Office of Public Works opened a permanent exhibition on Fr Frank Browne SJ at Emo Court.

The papers of St Mary’s, Emo concern the management of the Emo estate (1900-1995), establishment of the Jesuit community (1928-1930), maintenance, upkeep and expenditure (1931-1970), forestry and the sale of Emo (1969-1970; 1995). There is some material on the Jesuit community (1934-1962) and novitiate (1930-1969) however there is very little in the way of information on individual novices. Material is in the form of handwritten letters, ledgers, architectural plans, maps and photographs.

Includes a letter thanking Dr. Russell for sending him verses written on '...the occasion of laying the first stone of your new church...I am glad...you will soon have a church worthy of the college over which you preside.' Admires the design and remarks 'I presume Pugin originally designed a church to go with the college...'.

Asks Fr Walsh to communicate to him details in relation to the proposed painting of Blessed Peter Faber, and asks where it is to be sent. Reports that the Fr General is in Fiesole at present.

Reports that the Fr General has decided to help Dr Ricard with his college; asks Fr Walsh to find someone to take charge of it, and who would be competent to teach philosophy and theology in ‘a new colonial establishment’. Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.

Letter to Fr John Conmee SJ from the poet Aubrey de Vere, Curraghchase, County Limerick in reply to Fr Conmee’s letter thanking de Vere for sending him some of his father’s sonnets, “…but for a mistake on the Publisher’s part they would have been forwarded to you long since. They form part of a volume now out of print, which my Father published as long ago as 1842 entitled ‘A Song of Faith’ and consisting chiefly of poems illustrative of the Apostles’ Creed”. Discusses some of his father’s poems, the nature of poetry and reflects ‘It is really marvellous to think what might be done for the Catholic cause and for the moral and intellectual well-being of the country by even a few first-rate Catholic literary works. Perhaps the next generation may give us a Catholic Coleridge to write Philosophy, a Catholic Wordsworth to be our Poet, a Catholic Scott to illustrate Ireland as Scott illustrated Scotland in his Novels, and a Catholic Historian to undo all the mischief done by the erroneous Tradition. Four such writers would do a marvellous work in the next thirty years; and there seems no reason why Ireland alone might not provide them all, if only the ability so constantly running to waste among us were at once properly developed and disciplined.’

Announces that he has decided to send [Thomas] Manning on the Zambesi mission, and asks Fr Tuite to send him to Louvain. Reports that a new edition of the Epitome Instituti is almost completed and advises Fr Tuite to order copies for the members of the Irish Province. Announces that he leaves the following day for Gibraltar, and afterwards goes to India ‘on some business of the Society’.
