Copies of two letters from Fr Alexander Kyan SJ to Dr. Scallan. The first refers to Scallan's letter of 13 September. Refers to his [Fr. Kyan's] brother Howard's removal to Dr Duncan's, and assures him that he has been a frequent visitor. Refutes the suggestion that his brother is being detained. (15 September 1859). In the second letter Fr Kyan requests that Dr Scallan should send him ‘no other impertinent letters’. (9 January 1860). There is also a note at the bottom of the page stating that Howard was removed from Dr Duncan’s on 29 December 1859, and that ‘James sailed for Liverpool’ on 16 January 1860.

Also remarks ‘I am…beginning to long for a sight of old Erin and dear old Gardiner Street, and Father Bannon’s righthand man and coadjutor, Mr. Keogh. I saw the Holy Father for the third time yesterday…He is the most good natured man you ever saw, full of simplicity and holiness and warm heartedness; and he was greatly interested in all we were doing in the Church. I am glad you report so favourably of Father Bannon’s health. All the same I think it would do him good to have a change after his many colds and bronchitis.’

Copy letter from Frederick Lucas, 25 Pembroke square, Kensington, London to Daniel O'Connell concerning a letter written by O'Connell to Lucas and the split between O'Connell and the Young Irelanders. Remarks that the letter gave him '...very great pain...' Remarks '...I feel most deeply mortified that any words I can have used in the 'Tablet' or elsewhere should have received from you...the hateful interpretation which is implied.' Apologises for any hurt or upset caused. Continues by commenting on O'Connell's letter and defends his position and opinion with regard to the Young Irelanders and other political matters. Remarks 'It is and it will be more than ever, my task in the 'Tablet' to urge upon them the unsoundness of their views in many points'. Refers to a letter he (Lucas) received from Rev. Dr. R. J. Whitty commenting on the Young Irelanders. Includes a copy of the letter in question (29 August [ ], 2pp). Expresses his dismay at O'Connell's accusations that he (Lucas) has '...joined against...'O'Connell. Remarks the this is 'unfounded'.

Discusses political matters, remarks that the Corn Bill '...is safe after last night's division.' Continues 'If it be finally settled on Friday, the coercion bill division will take place that night but at any rate on Monday. A small majority against ministers is considered certain, but I find it believed that Peel will stay in though beaten. I need not say how glad we shall be if it be so. Peel would then dissolve and in the new parliament the Whigs, if successful, would be as weak as we could wish them.'

Cullen concerning Fr Cullen’s entrance to the noviceship and reminding him to obtain his “letteres dimissoriales” from Dr Warren. Remarks that he hopes to be able to secure a place on the continent. Refers also to the issue of money and remarks ‘We have not any shares in Banks nor do we want our money in that way.’ Suggests that the shares should be transferred to Fr Cullen’s name, sold and reinvested.

• Includes a letter agreeing that the books mentioned by MacDermott would suit the series. Remarks that stories will be needed and advises where to look for them. A note on the letter indicates that MacDermott proposed to use Duffy's name for the series. Remarks 'The name you propose for the series bangs Bannagher! There is not a living man whom it would not turn into ridicule and contempt to employ his name in such a manner; that sort of distinction is reserved for the dead (15 December 1892, 4pp).
• Includes a letter discussing a book - 100 Best Irish Poems. Considers the amount of pages each poem will require and the poets that should be included. Remarks 'I don't know what your opinion of Mr. Yates (sic) may be: mine is that his verses are the perfection of commonplace. Miss Tynan has made a collection of Irish love poems in which she selects from Mr. Yeats the amours of a kitchen maid. He is however a very self-confident critic; and has recently disparaged Davis and MacCarthy and declared that the Spirit of the Nation contained nothing of any value except Ingram's song.' (17 September 1895, 4pp).

Expresses his joy at reading some of the entries but remarks 'At the same time I would be glad if there were two less of Davis and three less of Ferguson to be replaced by a specimen of Katherine Tynan, Ellen O'Leary, Dora Sigerson...' Remarks that he was asked by Lord Aberdare to accept the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria but for personal reasons he refused this offer and instead agreed to take on the responsibility of organising a judicial system '...on the distinct understanding that I might come away as soon as I liked. This I have accepted on the condition I was to take out a barrister with me who would take up the post when I left.' Continues 'My thoughts at once turned to barristers who had been at the Oratory School...it is now settled and arranged that Mr. W. V. Kane of the Dublin Bar and an O.S. boy is to go out with me and remain as C(hief) J(ustice).' Asks for Cardinal Newman's blessing.

Copy of administration in relation to the estate of James Johnston Mullan, late of Sandymount Castle, Dublin, who died on 12 June 1939. Issued by the High Court of Justice; the Principal Probate Registry. States that the last will of Johnston, of which a copy is included, did not name any executor, and that on 3 October 1939 Letters of Administration of all and singular the personal estate of the deceased were granted to William Morgan Mullan, son of the deceased. Certifies that an Affidavit for Inland Revenue was delivered showing the gross value of Johnston’s personal estate within Ireland to be £2994.2.0 for the purpose of Estate Duty, and that the amount of £270.3.10 for Estate Duty and interest thereon has been paid.

The will of James Johnston Mullan bequeaths all of his real and personal estate to his son William Morgan Mullan and his daughter Kathleen Mullan in equal shares, but if the latter should marry or decide to live elsewhere she is to be paid the sum of £1,500. William Mullan to support and maintain Kathleen and James’ wife (their mother) and pay each of them the sum of £1 weekly during their lives, and in case of Kathleen’s marriage or removal, the sum of five hundred pounds each to be paid to his wife and son James Morgan of Stroud, Gloustershire (sic). If his wife should decide to live separately and apart from the other legatees William Morgan and Kathleen or either of them she shall be paid £1000 in addition to the legacy of £500.

Copy of Agreement and Deed of Charge between Modern Homes (Dublin) Limited, having their registered office at St Andrew’s, Serpentine Avenue, Ballsbridge, Dublin (the contractors) of the one part, and the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor, Aldermen and burgesses of Dublin, being the Urban Sanitary Authority for the Urban Sanitary District of the City of Dublin (the Corporation) of the other part. The contractors covenant with the said Corporation that the former, their successors and assigns etc. shall at their own expense put, maintain and keep in repair the drain or sewer of said the premises as shown on an accompanying map, and described in a schedule to the agreement (property on Gilford Road, Sandymount), or in default thereof that the Corporation be at liberty upon giving to the contractors 48 hours’ notice in writing, to do such work as may from time to time be necessary to put, maintain and keep the same in such repair as aforesaid and thereupon the said contractors, their successors and assigns will from time to time pay to the said Corporation all costs, charges and expenses of putting, maintaining or keeping in repair the common drain or sewer of the premises. The contractor further charge upon the premises all sums costs and expenses which may be incurred by the Corporation in carrying out the above, provided that such charges shall be equally divided amongst and borne by each of the houses.

Remarks that he and others are confused '...on account of this Roman Rescript on the Veto.' Continues 'It is considered here that the treatment was most contemptible to the Irish Bishops, Clergy and people.' Refers to Fr St Leger's family who '...are teasing me to write to you to know do you expect him. The Bishop told me it would be well to know as if there was no expectation of him that the matter should be broken to his poor mother.'

Claims that he knows of no ex-Jesuits who maintain that their Society is canonically re-established in the British Dominions. Refers to a ‘severe letter’ received by him from Cardinal Borgia in relation to the matter. Copy of letter from Cardinal di Pietro to Archbishop Troy. States that neither Fr Callaghan nor any of the other surviving Irish ex-Jesuits are at liberty to dispose of their property in any other way but in favour of the Irish bishops. Refers to the claim that a Papal rescript exists, which re-establishes the Society of Jesus in the Kingdom of Ireland, in which case the property of ex-Jesuits would belong to the Society. Letter appears on the same document as a letter from Fr Thomas Betagh to Fr Stone.

Copy of letter from Cardinal di Pietro to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ. Refers to the appeal made by the prelates of Ireland to Rome in relation to the will of the late Fr Richard Callaghan. Claims that the latter, according to an oath sworn on 23 August 1793, should have left his property to Fr Betagh, and not to Stone. Demands that Stone transmit to Rome an authentic copy of the Pope’s alleged rescript, by which Callaghan believed himself to legitimately free to dispose of the funds of the ex-Jesuits in favour of Stone (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the reply to it from Fr Stone, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Copy of letter from Dr Grant, Director of the Scottish College in Rome, to Sir Augustus Paget, British Minister to Italy. Writes in relation to the fate of the Roman College, and its status as a university for foreigners.

Copy of letter from Fr Christiaan Hoeken SJ, a missionary to the Pottawatomie tribe of North America, to the Fr General. Describes some of his experiences as a missionary, including his converting of a number of the tribe. Relates his activities in a typical day, including the celebration of Mass, the hearing of confession etc. Speaks of the natives’ devotion to the Virgin Mary. Asks the Father General for his assistance.

Copy of letter from Fr Christopher Briona SJ in Palermo to Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Praises the young novices sent by the latter, and expresses regret at the parting of Fr Peter Kenney SJ. Invites Plowden to come to Sicily. (In Italian).

Copy of letter from Fr Fergal McGrath SJ to Fr Anthony Bischoff SJ concerning the books, following a recent inquiry about them from Dr James Cotter, New York. ‘I gave you the news that I had found five (probably seven) of the books used or annotated by G.M Hopkins, which you so painstakingly located in 1947. You had mentioned that you had found fifteen to twenty such books. I sent you a list of all the books which I had found in the same cupboard, and asked you to let me know whether you could establish a link between any of them and Hopkins. If my letter went astray, I shall be glad to make another copy of the list.’

Copy of letter from Fr Gaetano Angiolini SJ to [ ]. Refers to Lord George Cholmondely, Viscount Malpas, son of Count Cholmondely, who was sent to Palermo by his father the previous summer for medical reasons. Refers to Fr St Leger SJ and Fr Charles Aylmer SJ. (In Italian).

Copy of letter from Fr Gaetano Angiolini SJ to Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Expresses his delight at the arrival in Palermo of the six novices sent by Plowden. Reports that Frs Glover and Kenney did very well in their theology exams, and claims that they are the two strongest students in that field. (In Italian).

Copy of letter from Fr. James Maher, writing from the Irish College in Rome, to [ ]. Sends greetings from residents of the College. Refers to Dr. Cullen, and states that he may return to Ireland on account of his health. Discusses death, sin, and the love of Jesus Christ for man. Also refers to his addressee’s health and household.

Copy of letter from Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ to Cardinal di Pietro - reply to the latter’s letter of 7 October 1809. Refers to Archbishop Troy’s appeal to Rome in relation to the will of Fr Richard Callaghan, and reminds the Cardinal of the oath sworn by all English priests to renounce all pretensions of the Holy See to interfere in civil affairs within Great Britain. Also alludes to the dangers of such interference especially when the Holy See is subject to the rule of Napoleon Buonaparte. Discusses the will of Fr Callaghan in relation to the agreement made by Irish ex-Jesuits in 1793, and asserts that no promise was ever made to leave Jesuit property to the Irish prelates. (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the one to which it replies, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Copy of letter from Fr Patrick Hughes SJ, writing from St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Fr William McCartan. Thanks the latter for purchasing the two milch cows, but explains that his (Hughes’) superior, the Provincial Fr Brown, did not want the two store heifers that were purchased at the same time, and that he had already made this fact clear to Fr McCartan. Sends the latter a cheque for the cows.

Copy of letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ in Palermo to Fr Thomas Glover SJ. Expresses delight that the latter returned safely to Stonyhurst. Reports the death of Cogan on 15 October. Reminds him to send a book for the Prince of Butera. Refers to the landing of French troops, the defence effort by the Sicilians, and the subsequent surrender of some French, and the flight of others back to Naples, upon the arrival of the British troops. States that Paccanari ‘has taken a wife & walks the streets of Rome with her with shameless effrontery.’ Expresses the fear that the Irish have complained of him (Kenney) ‘for having led F. Stone astray’.

Copy of letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Deals with the issue of the misunderstanding surrounding the Pope’s supposed assent to the aggregation of Jesuits to Russia. Refers to the involvement of Fr Thomas Glover SJ, Fr Gaetano Angiolini SJ, Cardinal Gonsalvi, Fr Gabriel Grüber, the Emperor of Russia, and others. States that Fr Angiolini advises that some Irish novices should be sent over to Palermo to make their vows, and then sent back to Ireland, in order to ensure that the property of the Irish ex-Jesuits remained with the Society.

Copy of letter from Howard Kyan to [ ]. Accuses the latter of doing nothing for him while he (Kyan) remained at Farnham House. Asserts that his sister-in-law is living under his addressee's roof, and is being directed by his ‘wicked counsel’. Also refers to his brothers John and Fr Alexander Kyan.

Copy of letter from Howard Kyan to Dr Scallan. Assures the latter that he is in good health, and is at liberty to go anywhere he wishes, having left Dr Duncan's some time previously. States that when his sister-in-law has become reconciled to her husband he shall be ‘very happy to see her’.
