Copied excerpt from the Public Record Office Papers, vol. 115 (10) of 1582. Includes list of accusations made against Sir Richard Shee, all involving association with Irish Catholics and the Church. Also includes a reply made by Sir Richard to Walsingham in 1580 in relation to accusations against him. Shee refers to a Mr White (Thomas White SJ [b.1558, entered 1593; d.1622]?) who stayed in his house for a season. States that White is ‘a priest’ and his wife’s cousin, but as far as he knew ‘no Jesuite’. Pasted onto 'The Spectator', 12 December 1885.

Book with the title ‘The manner of performing the Novena, or the nine days devotion to St Francis Xaverius of the Society of Jesus and Apostle of the Indies, as also the devotion of the ten Fridays to the same saint’ printed for Ignatius Kelly, at the Stationers-Arms in Mary’s Lane, Dublin, 1749 (88pp). Includes an article entitled ‘The Novena of Grace in Dublin 1749’ which was sent by Fr Kevin O'Rourke SJ to Fr Fergus O'Donoghue SJ with an explanatory note (10 May 2008). The article most probably written by Fr Francis Finegan SJ. The article explains the provenance of a book in the community library of St Francis Xavier’s, Gardiner Street, Dublin entitled, ‘The manner of performing the Novena, or the nine days devotion to St. Francis Xaverius of the Society of Jesus and Apostle of the Indies’. It concludes that the work was translated by Thomas Brennan and gives a brief biographical note. (5pp)

Unpublished manuscript by Dr Richard Robert Madden comprising a history of the Society of Jesus from its foundation to the early nineteenth century. Attached is a printed title page dated 1874, ‘The Jesuits: In Relation to Religion, Civil Government and Society at Large, In the Several Countries From Which They Have Been Expelled’. Manuscript is divided into two ‘volumes’ (each with an attached printed title page). Volume 1 comprises 17 chapters (c.1,163pp) and Volume 2 contains 21 chapters (c.1,100pp). Also includes three sets of appendices – Volume 1 Appendix with 6 Sections (c500pp); Volume 2 Appendix with 4 Sections (c400pp) and Appendix with 14 Sections (c400pp). Also includes an explanatory note by Fr Fergal McGrath SJ (Irish Province Archivist until 1986) (2pp, 20 April 1977). (R.R. Clune) 'He is very anxious to have a house and college of the Society in Perth...and he regards it as necessary to have a few men of ours to influence the upper classes.' Refers to a new University building that will soon be built and remarks that the Archbishop has purchased an acre of land for a hostel to be undertaken by the Society of Jesus. Concludes in a post script 'I think it would be well to prepare the authorities at home for Archbishop Clune's offer - Two Fathers would be sufficient for a start. It would be a splendid opening for the Society.'

Includes a letter written from Melbourne describing Prince Alfred's visit to the city. Describes the situation in St Patrick's College and remarks that its reputation is rising but that further money is needed. Remarks 'We will not be able to work the college even as a day-school for another year without help.' (26 November 1867, 4pp). Includes a letter concerning remarks made by Fr Lentaigne SJ to Fr Dalton SJ (Superior of the Mission). Refers to the estrangement between the Bishops and some of the priests and remarks 'It appears to me...that neither the Bishop nor the leading priests in the city were ever friendly, but that they required of us to work for them and to perform those duties especially which demanded a great deal of time and labour and for which there was no remuneration whatever...' (11 September 1868, 6pp). Includes a letter referring to a lecture delivered by Dr Bromby, headmaster of the Church of England Grammar School on Scripture. Remarks that the lecture was 'most heretical' but that Fr Moore SJ gave the vote of thanks. (13 August 1869, 3pp).
