A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Clongowes refused to pay the principal sum or the interest Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Rector, Fr James Corboy SJ, Mungret College remarking that he has instructed Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector of Clongowes to pay £332.15.4 to Mungret. Continues ‘I fear that their (the Scholastics) withdrawal from active participation...would simply mean its extinction.’.

Includes correspondence relating to the valuation of the property and the question of the ownership of the Mungret property. Finally, in 1928 a further session of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith decided the transference of the Lay School should not be insisted on but that the two schools should be administered separately (21 April 1928, 1p). Remarks that she was then offered a job on '...Fine Ghaedheal by my former "boss"...Bob Brennan and we are working together very harmoniously linking up the Irish race. Our Free State friends are...trying to smash us as they would smash the Republic and every Irish institution but we are going come out on top in spite of them.

Letters from Mr Thomas F. Ryan SJ, Rathfarnham Castle, County Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning the obtaining of a piano for the Juniors and remarking that his brother has just taken up practising as a dentist in Dublin. Asks Fr Provincial to send patients to him.

A file relating to part of the Rathfarnham estate known as Cliff. Includes correspondence concerning its value and the rental of the land. It was proposed to have a novitiate there, and Charles Powell indicates that expenditure would amount to £15, 415 to fit out (6 September 1911).

File containing extensive documentation concerning the will of Charles Kennedy and his bequest to the Society of Jesus. The Society used the proceeds from this bequest to construct University Hall, Hatch Street. The extent of the file can be explained by the numerous properties owned by Charles Kennedy and the necessary documentation that inevitably accompanies ownership of property, receipts and vouchers from professional companies involved in the construction of University Hall and the fact that the will of Charles Kennedy was contested by his brother Frank Kennedy. His legal action was unsuccessful (29 January 1909 & 30 January 1909 & 30 May 1912, 3 items).

Includes a letter from Patrick J. Little, executor of his brother's will. Enquires '...I would like to know whether a claim would be advanced on behalf of Father Robert to a share on technical grounds.' (27 January 1927, 2pp).

A file relating to the will of Matilda O'Donnell in which she bequeathed the residue of her property to her trustees and executors, Fr. Thomas V. Nolan SJ and Fr Michael Browne SJ, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin. The file contains extensive background material that appears to have little to do with the Society of Jesus and their bequest. However, as Frs. Nolan and Browne were appointed as trustees and executors of the will it may have been necessary to acquaint themselves fully with Miss Matilda O'Donnell's affairs.

• letters from Madame Chaponniére-Chaix, ex-President, International Council of Woman, Geneva, Switzerland (16 December 1922-26 January 1923) to ‘My dear President’ (of International Council of Woman, Lady Aberdeen, Aboyne, Scotland). The first letter (written in French) comments on the potential for a Red Cross mission to Ireland (16 December 1922). The second letter (written in English), refers to a letter received from Miss O'Brennan, through the Peace and Freedom League, regarding a visit from the Police at Dr Lynn’s Hospital and the arrest of Miss Mary Comerford. Madame Chaponniére-Chaix doesn’t believe that the time is right for a Red Cross mission to Ireland (26 January 1923);

• copy of note ‘Projet Hayes Humanity Dublin’ which refers to Madame Chaponniére-Chaix and the establishment of the Red Cross in Ireland (In French), (nd.);

• leaflet entitled ‘The extreme penalty’ which details the words of Mr Eamon Aylward in relation to his involvement in disturbances in Kilkenny "The extreme penalty”: Mr. Eamon Aylward, in the document with his signature attached which has been found upon an irregular captured by the Kilkenny force, has lighted up, as by a lightning flash, the criminality of the militarist attack upon the people...but that such an order could be issued by a man blaspheming the honourable name of Irish Republican will reveal to the people the tyranny that they have escaped (1922);
