Includes a letter thanking Dr. Russell for sending him verses written on '...the occasion of laying the first stone of your new church...I am glad...you will soon have a church worthy of the college over which you preside.' Admires the design and remarks 'I presume Pugin originally designed a church to go with the college...'.

Memorandum of Agreement between Dr Nicholas Wiseman, St. Mary's College, near Birmingham and Thomas Richardson and Son, Printers and Publishers, Derby concerning the Dublin Review. The Agreement sets out the terms and conditions for Thomas Richardson and son to become the sole and exclusive proprietors and publishers of the Dublin Review from the 34th issue. Eight conditions are listed in the Agreement.

Refers to an obituary he and Dr Manning are writing for 'the Cardinal' and asks for information '...he (Dr Manning) suggested that you and Mr Bagshawe are probably best acquainted with the facts of the Cardinal's connexion with the foundation and early conduct of the Review.'

Letter from Ellen (nee Mulholland) Russell, 86 Harley Street, London, England to her mother concerning Charles Russell's (her husband) speech in court. Remarks 'I have just returned from the court after hearing the end of "the speech" and my head is so full I can hardly speak or write...I feel I can never thank God enough that I have lived to see this day. My Darling has had a fearful task to accomplish and he has done it well...' Continues '...I believe he has raised the Irish cause to a position which it never before held in the eyes of the people of England.' Describes the packed court room and the congratulations she received after the speech 'Dear old Mrs Gladstone caught my hand in both of hers and said "it was inspiration; I believe it has all been done by prayers" - just as a Catholic might say.'

Letter from Fr Edward Purbrick SJ, Stonyhurst College, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Announces that some [brothers/ scholastics] are to form a class at Manresa that year ‘to prepare that matter of the 1st B.A. Examination in the University of London.’ Discusses the first and second B.A. examinations. Suggests that Fr John O'Carroll SJ should be capable of teaching Matriculation subjects.

A file relating to the will of Matilda O'Donnell in which she bequeathed the residue of her property to her trustees and executors, Fr. Thomas V. Nolan SJ and Fr Michael Browne SJ, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin. The file contains extensive background material that appears to have little to do with the Society of Jesus and their bequest. However, as Frs. Nolan and Browne were appointed as trustees and executors of the will it may have been necessary to acquaint themselves fully with Miss Matilda O'Donnell's affairs.

A file of copy letters concerning the estate of Barbara Daly, deceased and a bequest of £1,000 to educate a child for the Jesuit Order.

Letters from Fr John Etheridge SJ, London & Liverpool to Fr [ ] SJ concerning a legal opinion he obtained on property belonging to the Society of Jesus in England. Remarks that counsel stated that the Society would become liable to the investigation of the Commissioners for Charitable Trusts. Continues '…I shall keep as quiet as I can and instruct our people that our properties belong to those individuals who are named in the deeds and can be disposed of by them as they see best, without any obligation of trust.'

A file relating to the estate of Catherine Cleary and litigation between Raphael Ambrose Biale, Plaintiff and Frs Timothy Kenny, Alfred Murphy and Christina Hodgens, Alice Chamberlain, Anne Healy, Mary Lentaigne, Emily O'Brien, Mary Anne Cleary and Jane Denehey.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Collegio Romano, Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that the Fr General has decided to help Dr Ricard with his college; asks Fr Walsh to find someone to take charge of it, and who would be competent to teach philosophy and theology in ‘a new colonial establishment’. Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Collegio Romano, Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.

Programme listing demonstrations given in various rooms in honour of the opening of the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge on Tuesday 16 June 1906. Includes a demonstration given by Mr. H. V. Gill entitled ‘Experiments with Spinning Tops to illustrate Earthquake Reactions’.

Letter to Irish Fr Provincial Cecil McGarry from Sr Mary Regis, Mercy Convent, Doon, County Limerick, following Fr Leonard Sheil's death. Encloses letters sent to her from Fr Sheil over a number of years and press-cuttings relating to him, in the hope they might be useful to the Society when writing Fr Sheil's biography. States ‘I thought I would like to do a little for him after all he did for me.…When he started his missions in England I used to make pictures & pieties to help him & send them to the different addresses. He sent me accounts of these missions…He never thought of himself, his aim was to use everything he could to bring souls to God… I have kept letters of his since 1939 & all the years of the war & until he wrote before Christmas to announce his illness’ (Aug. 1968, 4pp). Encloses seven letters from Fr Sheil, thanking her for sending badges and medals and discussing her health and his missions. Includes letter in which he remarks ‘…thanks so much for all your lovely pictures and things. They are immensely valued over here. Sometimes indeed religion is not valued, but I hope that these pictures etc. will make it impossible for them to forget the lovely things of Our Faith. One little boy brought five Protestant pals, mostly bigger than himself, to the mission at West Hartlepool. I have had many conversions of people years away from Mass and the Sacraments. Many others have rejected me. The [leak]age of the children when they leave school, & have no Catholic school, and no good parents, is frightful. I start missions again on January 8th at Coventry and near Northampton. They will be very tough, so help me with your prayers. I bless each house I enter, put them on their knees, if they don’t refuse, and instal (sic.) a holy picture’ (28 Dec. 19--, 2pp). Copy of letter from Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ to Cardinal di Pietro - reply to the latter’s letter of 7 October 1809. Refers to Archbishop Troy’s appeal to Rome in relation to the will of Fr Richard Callaghan, and reminds the Cardinal of the oath sworn by all English priests to renounce all pretensions of the Holy See to interfere in civil affairs within Great Britain. Also alludes to the dangers of such interference especially when the Holy See is subject to the rule of Napoleon Buonaparte. Discusses the will of Fr Callaghan in relation to the agreement made by Irish ex-Jesuits in 1793, and asserts that no promise was ever made to leave Jesuit property to the Irish prelates. (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the one to which it replies, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Copy of letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ. Describes his and others’ journey by land and sea to Salerno, via Falmouth.

‘Note on Sir J. Coxe Hippisley’. Recounts Sir Hippisley’s involvement in the Catholic question, and the ‘appendixes to his speech on the issue, which was rejected by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst’. Refers to some of his views, including his contention in relation to the transfer of Jesuit funds from England to Ireland.

Letter from Daniel O'Connell, London to Richard Barrett, editor of the 'Pilot' newspaper, Suffolk Street, Dublin, to be published as an open letter to the people of Ireland. ‘This is the first of a series of Letters which I intend to publish on the present state and future prospects of our Country including the best suggestions I can give for regulating your conduct in the manner most calculated to mitigate the evils of the one and to insure the amelioration of the other.’ (Letter is divided into five envelopes, each containing nine pages. Franked 6 April 1833.) 45pp

Richard Barrett, editor of the Pilot was prosecuted by the government for having published on 8 April 1833, the last letter. He was tried and found guilty, imprisoned for six months and fined £100. During his imprisonment, O'Connell paid Barrett a total of £656, consisting of his £100 fine, £150 in American subscriptions and weekly sums amounting to £406.

Includes copy letter to Fr Edward J. Warner SJ (Staff Chaplain to Mgr. Coghlan) from the Irish Fr Provincial in reply to the War Office’s request to retain the services of Fr Conal Murphy SJ. ‘I am sorry to say that I am worse off than ever for men, having received the other day a cable from Fr Joy, the Superior of our Hong Kong Mission, asking me to send out twelve men. As he and his fellow-missioners have been through a very rough time, as you can well imagine, I am anxious to send this help as soon as possible…I regret very much, then, that I cannot spare Fr Murphy, as I know by experience what it means to have vacancies yawning wide around one and none to fill them!’ (1 October 1945, 2pp).

Safe travel pass issued for Kevin Richard Stanislaus Nolan, by the German military authorities to travel from Bad Orb, through Holland to England. Kevin Nolan was a brother of Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ, and had been a solicitor in London. On the eve of the First World War, he travelled to Bad Nauheim, Germany to undergo treatment for a heart condition. He was arrested as a spy, imprisoned however later released. Includes a letter concerning his appointment as chaplain for continuous service with Australian troops going to the front. Remarks that he is very pleased with his appointment (15 July 1918, 3pp). Includes a letter referring to his arrival back in Australia and his new position doing parish work at St. Mary's, North Sydney. Remarks 'I have charge of the Men's sodality...meantime I am awaiting demobilisation...' (25 October 1919, 4pp). Includes a letter announcing his arrival in London and remarks how glad he is to be home. Remarks that he wishes to arrange receipt of his war bonus with the authorities before he leaves London for Dublin. (10 January 1920, 2pp).

Remarks 'At San Francisco there is a Priest (Fr O'Neill) who is Rector of Newman Hall in the University at Berkeley...a Catholic Hall like the one I am going to be acquainted with. I have a letter of introduction to him and hope to get some lights from him. They say he has done a great deal for his Hall...' (21 November 1918, 2pp). Includes a letter concerning his new position as Rector of Newman College. Refers to Fr O'Dwyer SJ. Remarks 'The poor man has had a v. heavy trial over this Newman College affair - and I think he has been dealt with rather unceremoniously.' Refers to an offer by the Archbishop of Perth inviting the Jesuits to establish a see also residence in Perth. Remarks 'I would remind your Reverence that we are very much undermanned out here - and unless you can send us out a good few subjects, it might be better not to extend the frontier that we have to garrison.' (21 January 1919, 2pp). Includes a letter reporting on Newman College after 18 months as Rector of the College (19 August 1920, 4pp). Also refers to the Catholic episcopacy and the Reformation.
