Walsh concerning the application of the Governing Body of University College for three years tenancy of the St Stephen's Green buildings. Remarks ‘The first essential preliminary to the transfer is obviously [to] providing a home for this community to which they may transfer their belongings...’. States that he has searched the neighbourhood for a suitable hall of residence where Jesuit Fathers could also live. Continues ‘...the most I could secure were two houses some 6 minutes walk from each other. No. 35 Lower Leeson Street... and Winton House, Winton Road...’. Remarks that these two houses although physically separate ‘...will be under one jurisdiction the responsible head being the superior in Leeson Street.’. Concludes ‘...I recognise most fully the advantage of having the new Institution begin its existence in the old home of Newman’s “Catholic University” and this helps me to go not merely with resignation but with positive gladness.’.

Concludes ‘The only drawback ...is that the Council...of Studies may seize the opportunity of investigating all sorts of things about the new University, and thus delay the business for months...’.

E. Doyle (Mullaghadun, Dungannon, County Tyrone) discussing his ideas on entropy and concluding ‘I would strongly advise you to consult an authority on physics and biology before publishing anything more on this subject, as erroneous arguments, although they should not be taken as proving anything one way or the other generally throw some discredit on the thesis which they are used to support’ (3pp).

Copy letter from John Edward Pigot, Chambers to John [Mitchel]. Refers to MacNevin and the 'shocking' news of his 'insanity'. Remarks '...it is to be hoped that his illness may be only temporary...' Discusses political matters, remarks that the Corn Bill '...is safe after last night's division.' Continues 'If it be finally settled on Friday, the coercion bill division will take place that night but at any rate on Monday. A small majority against ministers is considered certain, but I find it believed that Peel will stay in though beaten. I need not say how glad we shall be if it be so. Peel would then dissolve and in the new parliament the Whigs, if successful, would be as weak as we could wish them.'

Remarks 'Indeed I suspect the Editor of that paper wants to be returned to Parliament through ecclesiastical influence.' Refers to the National Petition. Continues 'I am still very strongly of opinion that the rejection of that Petition ought to be followed up, and that quick, with an address somewhat like what I sent you a draft of - and that the address ought to be- not to mankind in general, but to the Emperor of the French or to the French people.'

Includes typewritten copy of the above letter.

Remarks that he has not received an answer to a previous letter to Daniel O'Connell and that he can no longer delay the publication of the next issue of the 'Dublin Review'. Proposes to bring out the next issue himself '...I therefore beg to request you to inform me whether you make any objection to my doing so...In making this proposal you will understand that I do not intend to consider you liable in respect of that No. either for pecuniary loss or literary responsibility...' Concludes 'You will no doubt recollect that our agreement contains an undertaking on your part to use your best exertions to relieve Mr Richards and myself from such loss as we might sustain in this business...'
