He regretfully informs Fr Murphy that it is the opinion of four professors, and apparently a good many others, that the singing of the principal soprano and the principal bass [the Macdermotts] is not good.

At this time Fr Ffrench SJ was the substitute English Assistant to Fr General. As a result many of the letters have an official slant. Letter from Sr Mary Baptist Russell, St Mary's Hospital, San Francisco to her sister Sarah Russell (later Mother Mary Emmanuel, Sister of Mercy, Newry) concerning Sarah's desire to join the sisters in Newry but that their mother has objected to this. Suggests that Sarah might come out to join her in California. Remarks '...I half concluded in my own mind that the Almighty destined you to share in our [life] here and was making use of dear Mamma's opposition to your wishes.' Remarks that they are very short of sisters. Concludes 'I dare say Mother Catherine (in Newry) will think I am somewhat selfish but no selfish motive activates me I assure you...'

Notebook with handwritten entries written by the Irish Fr Provincials on completing his annual visitation of the Galway residences. The first entry is by the Vice Provincial, Joseph Lentaigne. At the beginning of the notebook, a financial status is outlined for the
residences in Galway as they returned to Galway in 1859. The Provincials’ notes on their visitations refer to the physical and spiritual state of the college, house and church finances, and the observance of regulations; such as the pealing of bells and the non playing by the boys in certain areas. The community are commended for their successes with regard to religious observance, house regulations etc., and recommendations for improvements are made also. (In Latin and English).

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, Royal Irish Academy, Dublin to T. D. Mc [ ], Montreal, Canada regarding a draft of $100 sent to O'Curry to purchase books. O'Curry apologises for the delay explaining that some volumes he wished to purchase were not available and that he fell ill on two occasions. O'Curry refers to the death of his son in 1857 and his wife in 1858. Concludes that he is still working on the Brehon Laws and that he has published the first twenty one lectures given by him to the Catholic University.

Letter from Dr W. Scallan to Fr Alexander Kyan SJ. Voices his concern over the further detention of Fr Kyan’s brother in a ‘Lunatic Asylum’, and states that he wishes to withdraw the authorisation which he originally gave for his detention.

Letter from Dr W Scallan to Fr [ ]. Refers to the concerns he has in relation to the detention of Fr Alexander Kyan's brother. States that he may make an application to the Queen’s Bench regarding the matter. Encloses letters, which he hopes will explain the matter further (not included).

Letter from Dr W Scallan to Fr [ ]. Refers to the latter’s reply to his letter of 19 January. Defends himself and his actions with regard to his dealings with Fr Kyan. Claims that he advised 'a course of extreme liberality towards Rev A Kyan in the recent events', and states that the latter ought to be grateful to him (Scallan). Asks for the return of the letters he sent, and directs his addressee's attention to the pamphlet, which he encloses (not included).

Copy of letter from Howard Kyan to [ ]. Accuses the latter of doing nothing for him while he (Kyan) remained at Farnham House. Asserts that his sister-in-law is living under his addressee's roof, and is being directed by his ‘wicked counsel’. Also refers to his brothers John and Fr Alexander Kyan.

Remarks 'I am happy to tell you that my new researches enable me to trace the direction of (the second wall) and that this direction leaves outside of the city the Holy Sepulchre and Calvary. Concludes 'I will feel very happy if I can put some new weapons in the learned hands of such an apologist as you are and contribute in that way to the defence of our dearest traditions.'

Letter from John MacHale, Archbishop of Tuam, to Irish Fr Provincial Joseph Lentaigne SJ. Refers to the latter's letter, which announced that Fr O’Reilly was being sent to MacHale’s diocese to conduct a retreat for the clergy on 20 August. Expresses his gratitude.

Copies of two letters from Fr Alexander Kyan SJ to Dr. Scallan. The first refers to Scallan's letter of 13 September. Refers to his [Fr. Kyan's] brother Howard's removal to Dr Duncan's, and assures him that he has been a frequent visitor. Refutes the suggestion that his brother is being detained. (15 September 1859). In the second letter Fr Kyan requests that Dr Scallan should send him ‘no other impertinent letters’. (9 January 1860). There is also a note at the bottom of the page stating that Howard was removed from Dr Duncan’s on 29 December 1859, and that ‘James sailed for Liverpool’ on 16 January 1860.

Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Joseph Lentaigne SJ to Fr Daniel Jones SJ. Advises the use of the English or Latin language for the Irish noviceship. Quotes from a letter from the Father General on the subject of the serving of punch to scholastics. Also refers to the wearing of watches by novices.

Regulations made by the Father General in response to the Vice-Provincial's visit and his report thereon. The rules concern the regulation of timetables in relation to ‘the duties of the day’, such as prayer, meditation, Masses, confessions etc., as well as mealtimes. There is an emphasis on obedience to authority, as well as economy, and a certain amount of disengagement from secular life. It is noted that the ‘Spirit of the Rule…is quite inconsistent with unnecessary visits to persons of the other sex’.

Regulations in relation to mealtimes, times of confessions, prayer, and Masses, dining out, accounts, cases of conscience etc.

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, Brehon Law Office, Trinity College Dublin to Dalton regarding a proof sent to by Stokes to O'Curry. Apologises for the delay in replying. O'Curry indicates a number of mistakes and discusses some corrections.

Remarks that he is now arranging to have the outstanding amounts paid to the Inland Revenue Office in Drogheda.

Letter from John Mitchel, 19 Rue de l'Est, Paris, France to John Edward Pigot commenting on the 'Nation'. Remarks 'Indeed I suspect the Editor of that paper wants to be returned to Parliament through ecclesiastical influence.' Refers to the National Petition. Remarks that he is very confident of the effect it will have. Continues 'I am still very strongly of opinion that the rejection of that Petition ought to be followed up, and that quick, with an address somewhat like what I sent you a draft of - and that the address ought to be- not to mankind in general, but to the Emperor of the French or to the French people.'
