Handwritten memorandum by Fr William Delany SJ, regarding the purchase of Killiney Castle by the Society of Jesus. Describes in detail the events leading up to, and surrounding, the purchase of the property. Describes how Fr Walsh (Irish Fr Provincial) insisted on telling the Cardinal about the purchase before the transfer had been completed ‘He went accordingly and returned in a very short time quite disappointed. The Cardinal had received the proposal unfavourably...’. Continues ‘I then said it would be my duty at once to inform Mr Warren (owner of Killiney castle) of this difficulty...He replied that it did not surprise him as he half suspected the Cardinal wished to have the place himself...’. Refers to his (Fr Delany’s) meeting with the Cardinal who finally agreed to allow the deal with Mr Warren to be completed. Remarks that a second meeting with Mr Warren revealed that a better offer had been received and accepted by him ‘I was much disappointed of course and asked him the purchaser’s name and the terms. He told me Mr Richard Martin had bought the property for 11,000 cash...’. Describes a meeting with Mr Martin and their agreement ‘...I finally asked him what he would have for his bargain as he had said he brought it as a speculation. He replied...£1,000 on his bargain.’. Concludes that the purchase of property was completed a few weeks later.

Refers to a letter from the latter, the subject of which Fr Armellini has communicated to the Fr General. Expresses the hope that Fr Walsh has by now received the painting and drawing of Fr Ffrench, by way of Miss Fleming. Adds that ‘[t]he professor shall not be sent’ until word comes from Fr. Walsh. Encloses small photographs of the portrait (not included). Contains note written by Fr Walsh regarding the content of the letter.

Acknowledges the receipt of the latter's letter, with enclosures, of 24 November. States that he has not yet heard of the arrival of Dr Conroy. Refers to effect these events are having on the Fr General, and reports on the exodus of the residents from the house. Announces that he and Fr. Lambert are going to the English College. Refers also to the Roman College and the South American College. Refers to confusion in relation to the Pope’s rights over the Observatory. Reports that the Fr General gave him a letter from Fr Walsh, in which he refers to ‘the house in Stephen's Green’, and declares himself to be glad that Fr Walsh has accepted it, and hopes that ‘an energetic man devoted to study’ will be appointed as head.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Florence, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Asks the latter to post the enclosed letters (not included) to Frs Ronan and Kelly. States that the diplomas are to be posted that day, and that he sent Fr Walsh ‘a lithographed account of the suppression of the Gesù’ two days previously, and adds that he also sent one to Fr Gallwey. Refers to the University, and expresses the hope that it will be successful. Reports that the property of the Irish College outside the walls of Rome is advertised for sale by the Giunta.

Letter from Fr Joseph Tappeiner SJ, Superior of the Austro-Hungarian Mission, St. Ignatius, Norwood to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ concerning the prospect of two Jesuit Fathers being sent out to Norwood. Expresses his satisfaction at the news and advises that the Fathers should be young men. Remarks 'We find that it is always more difficult for men whose habits are already formed to get into the way of colonial life.'

Unpublished manuscript by Dr Richard Robert Madden comprising a history of the Society of Jesus from its foundation to the early nineteenth century. Attached is a printed title page dated 1874, ‘The Jesuits: In Relation to Religion, Civil Government and Society at Large, In the Several Countries From Which They Have Been Expelled’. Manuscript is divided into two ‘volumes’ (each with an attached printed title page). Volume 1 comprises 17 chapters (c.1,163pp) and Volume 2 contains 21 chapters (c.1,100pp). Also includes three sets of appendices – Volume 1 Appendix with 6 Sections (c500pp); Volume 2 Appendix with 4 Sections (c400pp) and Appendix with 14 Sections (c400pp). Also includes an explanatory note by Fr Fergal McGrath SJ (Irish Province Archivist until 1986) (2pp, 20 April 1977). (R.R. The Countess was buried in the graveyard beside the church, and a memorial to her was also erected in Coolbanagher church by her sister the Duchess of Marlborough.

Includes a letter concerning his son's new residence (Dervent Hall, Sheffield). Remarks '...the Catholic element is sadly wanting and gives a desolate feeling. We have a priest and portable altar with us and I hope the first masses which can have been offered here since the reformation will bring a blessing on my son's taking possession.' Remarks 'In reply to your enquiry regarding John MacNamara, I was in his house when he died. This must have been before March 1799...I...have no further recollection of his having stated that he was at the Siege of Limerick than that I well remember his contrasting the mildness of the executions during the Rebellion of 1798 with the wholesale slaughter he himself witnessed in the same place.' (1 April 1863, 4pp). Gives names and ages of those he know whose age exceeded 100.

Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.

Letter to Fr John Conmee SJ from the poet Aubrey de Vere, Curraghchase, County Limerick in reply to Fr Conmee’s letter thanking de Vere for sending him some of his father’s sonnets, “…but for a mistake on the Publisher’s part they would have been forwarded to you long since. They form part of a volume now out of print, which my Father published as long ago as 1842 entitled ‘A Song of Faith’ and consisting chiefly of poems illustrative of the Apostles’ Creed”. Discusses some of his father’s poems, the nature of poetry and reflects ‘It is really marvellous to think what might be done for the Catholic cause and for the moral and intellectual well-being of the country by even a few first-rate Catholic literary works. Perhaps the next generation may give us a Catholic Coleridge to write Philosophy, a Catholic Wordsworth to be our Poet, a Catholic Scott to illustrate Ireland as Scott illustrated Scotland in his Novels, and a Catholic Historian to undo all the mischief done by the erroneous Tradition. Four such writers would do a marvellous work in the next thirty years; and there seems no reason why Ireland alone might not provide them all, if only the ability so constantly running to waste among us were at once properly developed and disciplined.’
