Medal of the Order of the Crown (Ordre de la Couronne), class Officier, conferred by the King of Belgium to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ. Includes official document concerning the decoration (6 May 1919) and letter from the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs (22 May 1919). The medal in case, with name of Fernanrd Heremans, Schaerbeek, is a five-armed white enamel and silver-gilt Maltese cross with silver-gilt graduated rays between the arms, on green enamel oval laurel wreath suspension; the face with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the gilt crown of Belgium; the reverse with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the cipher of King Leopold II, founder of the Order. Safe travel pass issued for Kevin Richard Stanislaus Nolan, by the German military authorities to travel from Bad Orb, through Holland to England. Kevin Nolan was a brother of Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ, and had been a solicitor in London. On the eve of the First World War, he travelled to Bad Nauheim, Germany to undergo treatment for a heart condition. He was arrested as a spy, imprisoned however later released. Remarks that he and others are confused '...on account of this Roman Rescript on the Veto.' Continues 'It is considered here that the treatment was most contemptible to the Irish Bishops, Clergy and people.' Refers to Fr St Leger's family who '...are teasing me to write to you to know do you expect him. The Bishop told me it would be well to know as if there was no expectation of him that the matter should be broken to his poor mother.'

Letters, telegrams, memoranda and notes relating to Belgian refugees in Ireland. Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

Letter from S.F. O'Mahony, Seminaire du Grand, Montrouge, Paris to his father (Martin Mahony) on the question of where he shall minister ‘…it is of no Consequence that I serve my God in one climate preferably to another provided I accomplish faithfully his ever adorable will, all I ask is to be allowed to follow his voice which evidently calls me to the Society, and of that you can entertain no reasonable doubt. The rest is not essential, so I abandon it to whatever dispositions may be made by you and my Superiors. As I am of an age at which tis customary in France to receive the Ecclesiastical tonsure, I hope you will have no objection to my contracting this preliminary obligation to persevere, begging you to obtain the necessary documents from Our Bishop to whose prayers I wish to be recommended.…I received two letters from the Clongonians but decline answering as I feel every day more & more the necessity of absolute retirement and complete sequestration to enable myself to meet with some confidence the serious duties which will be one day incumbent on me & which I learn in my solitude to appreciate.’ On reverse is a letter in French, by Fr Jean Baptiste Gury SJ, Master of Novices, Montrouge, Paris, France to the father of S.F. O'Mahony regarding his son's entry into the Society.

Includes a letter from Robert Peel to Dr. Charles Russell remarking that he has resigned the position of Chief Secretary for Ireland. Remarks that he is greatly disappointed not to have been able to obtain '...the government sanction...of the House of Commons for the erection of the Chapel so much needed for the use of your students...' Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he has come into possession of ‘some good relics’, and undertakes to send some to Ireland. Refers to Fr Carbery's health, and asserts that a new rector for Clongowes should be appointed as soon as possible. Also refers to Fr Ronan, and the decorations in his church, and to [W] Lynch. Comments on the fact that ‘someone in England has written strongly against the London University’.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Reports that he has just written by direction of the Fr General to Fr Denis Murphy SJ. Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.

The papers represented in this collection relate to an estate in Counties Kildare and Westmeath inherited by Fr John Errington SJ. Although Fr Errington was a member of the English Province, it was decided that the estate he inherited should be administered by the Irish Province who should also benefit from the income (J38/61 and J38/62).

The many legal documents contained in this collection highlight the complex nature of landed estates, particularly when the Land Commission became involved. It is difficult to trace exactly how Fr Errington came to inherit the estate in counties Kildare and Westmeath. But one document in particular, J38/27, reveals some valuable information. It would appear that a gentleman by the name of John Hyacinth Nangle (died 17 September 1865) left his estate to a number of beneficiaries, namely his wife Mary Nangle, George A. Nicolls (who was also appointed executor), Sir Percy Nugent and John Errington (later Fr Errington SJ). Following the deaths of Mary Nangle and Sir Percy Nugent (who died without issue - needs checking) the latter appointed George A. Nicolls, Walter Sweetman and Margaret Nugent executors and executrix of his will. In addition George A. Nicolls was appointed a trustee of the will of John Hyacinth Nangle instead of Sir Percy Nugent, deceased. After the death of George A. Nicolls his estate passed to his brother Archibald Dowdall Nicolls. This man died without issue and it would appear that Fr Errington inherited the Garrisker estate. Letters written by Fr Errington reveal that he had little knowledge of the property (J38/63). However, in a letter to Fr Farley he refers to a Cecil Nugent and remarks 'I was under the impression that Cecil Nugent who died lately in Canada without issue was the last in the entail...' (J38/64).

Diary includes entry dated 31 August 1909 which reads, ‘Since coming here to Mungret six years ago I’ve been struggling on much on the old lines ever seeking peace one way or another…It came upon me quite by surprise to be sent here from M(ill)town Park. I had been told I sh(oul)d be there 10 years (of course not for certain). Any way I made best of it. It was compensation to get away from relatives who had given me awful bother, poor creatures. I came here as Vice Rector & had lots of teaching. I had to study much & got on well enough. I expected to be appointed Rector, but after 2 years ceased to be Superior & felt it someways though I would have chosen it too.…In the matter of Latin it seems to me as if I had never known much about it before & still I am far from being a Latin scholar. This is absolutely true. Last year I had 2nd Arts Pass Greek & learnt a good deal about it too & glad of additional insight.…First year I had 1st Arts English Pass & Honors besides Pass [ ] of B.A. [And] 2nd Arts. Eyes got affected. Two months not allowed to read. Enjoyed the time. This year I had only Lat(in) B.A. & 2nd Arts & so like last year.…For all my reading, writing, thinking, results not much. I have not turned out at all what I expected. Much better so. I have given up thinking I ever shall.…I am now in my 63rd year, old enough to have sense. It is something to know that one has not much sense & never shall. Men are but children of larger growth.…one w(oul)d think I ought to have made more mark. Since I came here six years ago I have never been asked to preach anywhere, not even at the Crescent. I am glad now. I am determined for the future to be absolutely truthful with regard to mental state, & give up all sham.…I have a great deal of the buffoon in me. This vacation I was three weeks away at C.W.C.,…(Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare)…in Dublin & in [...]. All that time I was going about & meeting many. I joked & told stories & made people laugh &…in my own esteem shone & I am sure several thought I was always goodhumoured… the truth is very different.…As I have given up all desire of distinguishing myself, of attracting notice etc. I will try to make diary a companion.…The way to please God is to be as useful & helpful as one can. I must try. Reading & writing may be best for me.’

Diary is resumed after a three year break, on 1st October 1912, in an entry beginning ‘Tullabeg. here since Aug. 24th 1911.’

From Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Announces that he will not be able to go to Tullabeg that year. Reports on the situation in Clongowes, and on the various Jesuits residents there. Reports also on the Jesuit mission in the Isle of Man, where Fr Aylmer stopped for a time to assess the situation. Refers to the debate on the question of whether the mission there should be retained by the Irish Jesuits, and also to the opening of a new chapel in Douglas.

From Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Discusses the withdrawal of Irish Jesuits from their mission in the Isle of Man, with reference to the financial and logistical operations involved. Refers to the death of Fr Gahan, and the bishop’s reaction to it and to the departure of the Irish Jesuits. Also refers to Fr Aylmer’s reaction. Reports on the situation in Clongowes, and to the small amount of money received in the collections. Hopes that Fr Bracken will make his visitation within the month.

A file of letters from S. P. Redington, solicitors concerning the estate of Fr John Errington SJ. Refers to the will of George A. Nicolls (Fr Errington was named, amongst others, as one of the beneficiaries of this will and ultimately came to inherit the estates in Kildare and Westmeath. George A. Nicolls died without issue and his estate passed to his brother Archibald Dowdell Nicolls. The latter also died without issue and the estate was inherited by Fr John Errington SJ).
