The Bishop told me it would be well to know as if there was no expectation of him that the matter should be broken to his poor mother.'

Letter from Daniel O'Connell, politician, of Merrion Square, Dublin to James C Bacon of 27, Temple Street, Dublin asking for £60 to be placed in the Clongowes Wood College SJ account. In his letter he refers to the "Education Society" in Kildare Place - known as the Kildare Place School - who received government funding of £6,000 per annum, "to educate the Irish poor without distinction of sect or persuasion and employ the money in the most scandalous attempts at proselytism". He asks for Mr Bacon's support in ensuring that this situation is no longer allowed to continue.

Refers to a group of Polish fathers who are destined for Clongowes but remarks that he does not know when they will commence their journey. Refers to the General Congregation and the naming of the new Fr. General. Remarks 'You have no idea of all the imbroglios which I have witnessed here; men are men everywhere. I have so little that could edify you on the subject that I judge it more prudent not to enter upon it.' Asks to be remembered to members of the community in Clongowes Wood.

Remarks that their property in London is under threat '…Dr Poynter has employed a lawyer to claim our property in London. He has means of succeeding and his success will complete our ruin. We are in fact in a very dangerous crisis.' (23 July 1818, 2pp).
• Includes a letter concerning three scholastics from the English Province he proposes to send to Ireland for their studies. Describes the three (1 September 1818, 3pp).

Letter from Fr Joseph Tristram SJ, writing from Stonyhurst College, to [ ] in Clongowes. Refers to Fr Weston, and gives permission for him to visit his friends. Announces that he intends to come to Ireland with some pupils, who are to go to Dublin, and states that they are to travel ‘by the Waterloo steam packet’. Also refers to the death of the English Fr Provincial Charles Plowden SJ, and to Fr Scott’s report on how it happened. Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

Letter from S.F. O'Mahony, Seminaire du Grand, Montrouge, Paris to his father (Martin Mahony) on the question of where he shall minister ‘…it is of no Consequence that I serve my God in one climate preferably to another provided I accomplish faithfully his ever adorable will, all I ask is to be allowed to follow his voice which evidently calls me to the Society, and of that you can entertain no reasonable doubt. The rest is not essential, so I abandon it to whatever dispositions may be made by you and my Superiors. As I am of an age at which tis customary in France to receive the Ecclesiastical tonsure, I hope you will have no objection to my contracting this preliminary obligation to persevere, begging you to obtain the necessary documents from Our Bishop to whose prayers I wish to be recommended.…I received two letters from the Clongonians but decline answering as I feel every day more & more the necessity of absolute retirement and complete sequestration to enable myself to meet with some confidence the serious duties which will be one day incumbent on me & which I learn in my solitude to appreciate.’ On reverse is a letter in French, by Fr Jean Baptiste Gury SJ, Master of Novices, Montrouge, Paris, France to the father of S.F. O'Mahony regarding his son's entry into the Society.

‘Note on Sir J. Coxe Hippisley’. Recounts Sir Hippisley’s involvement in the Catholic question, and the ‘appendixes to his speech on the issue, which was rejected by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst’. Refers to some of his views, including his contention in relation to the transfer of Jesuit funds from England to Ireland.

Letter from Charles Russell, Maynooth College, County Kildare to his mother (Anne McEvoy) telling her about his life as a student at Maynooth. Describes his day when he rises at 6 o'clock and the various chores he must attend to. Remarks 'We have a great deal of praying to do here.' Continues 'The lay college is quite separate from the Ecclesiastic and it is one of the rules not to hold any intercourse with those in the other college.'

Letter from Charles Russell, Maynooth College, County Kildare to his sister Anne Russell. Remarks that there was an eclipse of the sun 'I observed it very accurately. When I saw it first a very small segment was obscured but in a short time more than one third was covered. I never had a perfect idea of an eclipse until today. Describes what it is like to be studying in Maynooth. Remarks that he has a bad place in the study hall as the people around him talk. Refers to his room 'I am beginning already to feel the cold at night. I suppose it is because my curtains are so bad if they may be called curtains which are all full of holes and as thin as wafer.' Includes a xerox copy of the letter.

Reports at length on the death of Fr John O'Connor SJ, who died following an accident on the road from Naas. Also reports that Fr Bracken was succeeded a few days previously by Fr St Leger as Vice Provincial, and refers to others of the community also.

Refers to what he believes to be the decision on the Education Question, which he has transcribed on two sheets of the letter (in Latin). Gives news of Christianna, and her activities in Rome, as well as of others, such as the Misses Edmondstones and Fr Esmonde. States that Fr Kenny has not arrived. Refers to the ‘distinguished folk’ in Rome – Queen Christina of Spain and the Duchess of Cambridge. Adds that Dr Cullen has not returned yet, and hopes that Fr Meagher has met him. Refers to the changes at Clongowes and at Gardiner Street.

Also reports on political and social issues, including Daniel O’Connell’s activities in relation to Repeal, the campaign against landlords, the Lord Lieutenant’s policies, Peel’s new taxes. Refers to Belvedere, which he visited on a recent trip to Dublin, as ‘a splendid Mansion’. Also refers to a letter received from ‘Mr. Cooper of Calcutta’, which gives news of that part of the world.

A file relating to Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ missionary work in Malta. Includes documents relating to religious instruction of Catholics, descriptions of clerical controversy, disputes with Protestants, conversions of Protestants to Catholicism, preaching, Catholic education, addresses presented to the Governor of Malta, Fr Esmonde's Journal describing his time in Malta, correspondence. Letters are addressed to Fr Esmonde at San Calcedonia, outside Valletta. This house belonged to the Sicilian Province and Malta had a close connection with the Sicilian Province. Note: at least 50% of the documents are written in Italian.

Letter from Fr Carlo Piccirillio SJ, St Peter Canisius House, Rome, Italy to Fr Assistant John Ffrench SJ on presentation of "l'indirizzo e l'obolo del Convitti irlandese" (address and offering) from Clongowes Wood College SJ to Pope Pius IX. He indicated that Pope Pius IX conferred "la facoltà dell'ingulgenza" (the faculty of indulgence) on all the fathers at Clongowes. He also indicates that he will write of this to Fr Daniel Jones SJ, Socius to the Irish Provincial. Fr John Ffrench was Fr General's English Assistant.
