I have so little that could edify you on the subject that I judge it more prudent not to enter upon it.' Asks to be remembered to members of the community in Clongowes Wood.

Apparently he found that the first series – Jan. to May – was very popular. – stating ‘I enclose a list of places I wish to photograph for my next series of “Historic Mansions” – which is due to begin in October. The last set – January – May, brought me £25, & the next will be even more profitable, because the Editor told me that he is so satisfied with the results, that he will print more pictures of each house in the next series’ (14 July 1947, 2pp).

Holograph letter to Dr Michael Cox from Fr Gerard Manley Hopkins, in which he comments on the thesis of a book, or pamphlet, lent to him by Dr. Cox. The book in question was 'Arts and Industries in Ireland' by S.A. [Sarah Atkinson] (Dublin: M.H. Gill & Son: 1882), which contains two essays, one of which is ‘Irish Wool and Woollens, passages from the history of the staple trade’. Its thesis was that English interests had secured the suppression of the Irish woollen trade, thus contributing to the poverty of Ireland. Hopkins does not accept this – ‘Irish writers on their own history are naturally led to dwell on what in history is most honourable to Ireland…They are also led to dwell on what in history is most dishonourable to England…the most extensive…Irish woollen industry was frieze…this was never checked by English legislation…’.

Dr Cox, a university colleague of Fr Hopkins, was a distinguished Dublin physician, lecturer in the Medical School of the Catholic University Dublin and Examiner for the Royal University of Ireland.
S.A. was Sarah Atkinson, author of a Life of Mother Mary Aikenhead, Foundress of the Irish Sisters of Charity.

The letter along with another by Fr Hopkins (See J11/7) was presented to the then Editor of 'Studies' Fr Roland Burke Savage SJ by the late Fr Arthur Cox, son of the recipient. Both letters were published in 'Studies', Spring 1970 (Vol. LIX, No. 233) pp.19 - 25, with an explanatory introduction and notes by the then Editor, Fr Peter Troddyn SJ.

Letter to Fr Fergal McGrath SJ (Province Archivist, 1975 to 1986) from Fr Roland Burke Savage SJ (Clongowes Wood College), concerning the holograph manuscript of Hopkins’s 'St. Thecla' which Fr Burke-Savage discovered ‘while cleaning out Fr [Patrick] Connolly’s room (in St Ignatius, House of Writers, 35 Lower Leeson Street) when he was in (St.) Vincent’s having his leg set about 1948…I got leave from Engl(ish) Provincial to keep it on permanent loan.’

Diary includes entry dated 31 August 1909 which reads, ‘Since coming here to Mungret six years ago I’ve been struggling on much on the old lines ever seeking peace one way or another…It came upon me quite by surprise to be sent here from M(ill)town Park. I had been told I sh(oul)d be there 10 years (of course not for certain). Any way I made best of it. It was compensation to get away from relatives who had given me awful bother, poor creatures. I came here as Vice Rector & had lots of teaching. I had to study much & got on well enough. I expected to be appointed Rector, but after 2 years ceased to be Superior & felt it someways though I would have chosen it too.…In the matter of Latin it seems to me as if I had never known much about it before & still I am far from being a Latin scholar. This is absolutely true. Last year I had 2nd Arts Pass Greek & learnt a good deal about it too & glad of additional insight.…First year I had 1st Arts English Pass & Honors besides Pass [ ] of B.A. [And] 2nd Arts. Eyes got affected. Two months not allowed to read. Enjoyed the time. This year I had only Lat(in) B.A. & 2nd Arts & so like last year.…For all my reading, writing, thinking, results not much. I have not turned out at all what I expected. Much better so. I have given up thinking I ever shall.…I am now in my 63rd year, old enough to have sense. It is something to know that one has not much sense & never shall. Men are but children of larger growth.…one w(oul)d think I ought to have made more mark. Since I came here six years ago I have never been asked to preach anywhere, not even at the Crescent. I am glad now. I am determined for the future to be absolutely truthful with regard to mental state, & give up all sham.…I have a great deal of the buffoon in me. This vacation I was three weeks away at C.W.C.,…(Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare)…in Dublin & in [...]. All that time I was going about & meeting many. I joked & told stories & made people laugh &…in my own esteem shone & I am sure several thought I was always goodhumoured… the truth is very different.…As I have given up all desire of distinguishing myself, of attracting notice etc. I will try to make diary a companion.…The way to please God is to be as useful & helpful as one can. I must try. Reading & writing may be best for me.’

Diary is resumed after a three year break, on 1st October 1912, in an entry beginning ‘Tullabeg. here since Aug. 24th 1911.’

Letter to Fr William A Sutton SJ from his brother, Sir Abraham Sutton following the publication of 'The Clongownian' in June 1921, containing a photograph of him (Sir Abraham), following his election as President of the Clongowes Union, for 1920 – 1921, and an appreciation (p.120 – 121). States in his letter ‘Dont fail to read 'The Clongownian'. You will be amazed to read about your younger brother as indeed he was to read about himself.…I suspect who wrote it but I am not quite certain. It is artistically done but much over laudatory. You cried when I returned to the world but Providence decreed otherwise for there were many family matters that required my special attention. Just think I entered my 73rd year on last Monday. Oh how short they appear now!’

Expresses his extreme disappointment that the loan is not forthcoming despite two consultations and permission granted by Fr General Peter Beckx. Remarks that he cannot understand why Fr John Grene SJ has interfered in the matter (Fr Kelly was a Provincial Consultor of longstanding at this time; Fr John Grene was the Province Procurator at this time).

A file of letters from Fr Laurence Kieran SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Frs Provincial Thomas Nolan SJ (to Februrary 1922) and John Fahy SJ (from February 1922).
These letters are written by Fr Kieran to the Irish Fr Provincial on a variety of matters concerning the community and college, often about the behaviour of the students, and some practical matters, such as the implications of a lack of coal supply. Fr Kieran was at the time the Prefect of Studies and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community. Some of these were written at the behest of Fr Charles Mulcahy SJ, Rector of Clongowes Wood College SJ (1919-1922) and Fr John Joy SJ (1922 ff).

A file of letters from Fr Joseph Wrafter SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Frs Provincial James Murphy (to 1905), John Conmee (from 1905) and John Fahy SJ (from February 1922). These letters are written by Fr Wrafter to the Irish Fr Provincials on a variety of matters concerning the community and college. Fr Wrafter was at the time the Minister and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community.

A file of House Consultor letters from Fr James Daly SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan. These letters are written by Fr Daly to the Irish Fr Provincial on a variety of matters concerning the community and college. Fr Daly was at the time the Prefect of Studies to 1917 and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community. Fr Daly's health began to deteriorate in 1917 and he was changed to Coláiste Iognáid SJ for one year as a teacher. He was reassigned to the Clongowes Wood College community in 1918, and his mission was to care for his health. He spent some time over these years at St John of God's, Stillorgan, Dublin, from where he wrote the final letter (22 December 1920, 2pp).

Letter from Fr Edward Kelly SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ concerning the financial difficulties of Clongowes Wood College SJ. Remarks 'Our condition is deplorable and we are really at a stand still. We are in want of everything.' Describes the situation and asks for help from the Province. Concludes '…the necessity for raising some money £1,000 at all events is most urgent and cannot be escaped without great loss to the college…' (Fr Kelly was a Provincial Consultor of longstanding at this time).

Three sets of "Division" Extern Examination papers in Religious Knowledge held at Clongowes Wood College SJ Christmas 1902, including:

1. Division I paper (1p);
2. Divisions II, III and IV (2pp);
3. Division V (2pp).

Letter from Luke Duff, Trinity College to Luke J McDonnell at Clongowes Wood College SJ describing his life at Trinity College, Dublin. He refers to two young women named Lu and Emma and recounts his meeting with the latter even though he knows the reader is anxious of news about Lu! Remarks 'The very next time I see Lu you shall have the whole particulars.'

Letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ, Hardwicke Place, Dublin to Mr Daniel O'Connell, politician of Merrion Square acknowledging receipt of £28.15, in respect of fees - less expenses - for the education of the sons of Mr John Burke, at Clongowes Wood College SJ. Fr Kenney also adds a note saying "'Your son is very well and is a good and promising boy".

A file of letters from Fr Richard Golding SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ concerning Irish. Fr Golding writes on the topic of "Fr Provincial's Medal for Irish Essay" awarded at Clongowes Wood College SJ. Most of these letters are correspondence about which topics might best be chosen on which the essay might be written. The winning essay is published in the "The Clongownian" each year, which was being edited by Fr Gerald Corr SJ, who is mentioned a number of times in this capacity. Fr Golding was teacher of Irish in Clongowes at the time.

A file of letters from Mr Edward J Boyd Barrett SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ. Matters covered in these letters have to do with his writings, and the censorship of same by the Society before publication; the circumstances of and a request to assist his brother Mr Charles Boyd-Barrett; the setting up of the "Clongowes Social Work Club'. Included also is a letter of approval for one article from Fr Dominic Kelly SJ, who had acted as one of the censors. Mr Edward J Boyd Barrett was a scholastic on Regency at Clongowes Wood College SJ during this period of the letters.

A file of letters from Fr Patrick J Connolly SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ proposing to develop a "Social Action Series" of pamphlets, to be produced by the "Irish Messenger Office", as well as publishing his own MS in book form. Included among the letters is a "Statement of Case" for the "Social Action Series", as well as a "proofed" extract by a censor.

Sample letter from Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to parents/guardians about travel arrangements for the Easter vacation. The letter gives clear indication about travel arrangements from Kingsbridge Station Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Galway. The letter also requests information on any contagious or infectious sicknesses in the places where the student has stayed during the vacation. It also reminds parents/guardians of the regulations about visiting the students.

Sample letter from Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ parents/guardians inviting the return of pupils to the College on April 18th, following a scarlatina outbreak. Remarks that the school has been totally disinfected. The letter gives clear indication about travel arrangements from Kingsbridge Station Dublin, and Cork.

Letter from Florence E Quirke, General Secretary, Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland, 33 South Frederick Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin concerning the dismissal of Mr R O'Connor from his teaching position in Clongowes Wood College SJ, and stating that "it will be unnecessary for Mr R O'Connor to proceed with the appeal against his dismissal..." (1p). Attached to this letter is a formal document entitles "Procedure in Dismissal of Lay Secondary Teacher and Appeal from Such Dismissal" (1p).

Letter from Mr Stewart Fitzpatrick, Intermediate Education Board for Ireland, 1 Hume Street, Dublin to Fr James Daly SJ, Prefect of Studies at Clongowes Wood College SJ, concerning the calculation of the teacher's salaries grant. There is a personal note in the first paragraph, and he also remarks, confidentially, near the end "You will thus see that your college tops its rivals of the CSSp." (2pp).

Two letters from Br Denis Fennell SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Frs Provincial John Conmee (from 1905) and Thomas V Nolan (to 1922):

1. Proposal to Irish Fr Provincial John Conmee SJ by Br Fennell regarding the Church. Request that a family member be looked on favourably when applying for a post at the "Irish Messenger";
2. Apology to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ for an indiscretion at not informing of the publication without permission of a poem of Br Fennell under a nom de plume.

Letters from Fr Charles Mulcahy SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ concerning community matters at Clongowes Wood College SJ. These letters include Fr Mulcahy informing or requesting assistance from Fr Nolan in the ordinary business and administration of the College and Community. They include health issues relating to members of the community, teachers and staff, as well as performance in examinations. There is also a letter discussing the expulsion of a pupil, Redmond O'Regan. In addition there is a personal letter regarding Mr Edward Coyne SJ, who was experiencing some difficulties at Rathfarnham Castle (Fr Mulcahy knew him well, having been his Novice Master).

A file of letters from Fr William Dargan SJ, to Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ concerning financial matters at Clongowes Wood College SJ. Fr Dargan is Prefect of Studies at Clongowes, and also a Provincial Consultor.

• letter from Fr Dargan to Fr MacMahon indicating further developments on Fr Dargan's letter of 15 November (2 December 1941);
• letter from Fr Dargan to Fr MacMahon indicating that there is a change in requirements coming in relation to the University qualifications for teachers, and the implications this might have for Jesuit scholastics (23 October 1942, 2pp).

Mr O'Connell was studying at Valenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands at this time, where they had been using a Plössl telescope, so he was able to get information to write this document on the history and use of such a telescope. Enclosed with this document is a handwritten set of notes about packing the instrument.

Letter from Mr William Power SJ to a Jesuit friend seeking advice. Mr Power was a scholastic on regency at this time, and he was experiencing difficulty in his relationship with the Fr Robert Carbery SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ.

Letter from Fr Carlo Piccirillio SJ, St Peter Canisius House, Rome, Italy to Fr Assistant John Ffrench SJ on presentation of "l'indirizzo e l'obolo del Convitti irlandese" (address and offering) from Clongowes Wood College SJ to Pope Pius IX. He indicated that Pope Pius IX conferred "la facoltà dell'ingulgenza" (the faculty of indulgence) on all the fathers at Clongowes. He also indicates that he will write of this to Fr Daniel Jones SJ, Socius to the Irish Provincial. Fr John Ffrench was Fr General's English Assistant.
