Remarks that she was then offered a job on '...Fine Ghaedheal by my former "boss"...Bob Brennan and we are working together very harmoniously linking up the Irish race. Our Free State friends are...trying to smash us as they would smash the Republic and every Irish institution but we are going come out on top in spite of them.

The Irish Colleges were established chronologically as follows: Lisbon 1590, Salamanca 1592, Santiago de Compostela 1605, Seville 1608 or 1612, Rome 1628 and Poitiers 1674. Irish Jesuits were involved in the establishment or running of the colleges at Lisbon, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela and Seville. The colleges were established with the aim of educating and training students for the priesthood and acted as service and social centres for Irish religious communities all over Europe. Fr Thomas White SJ (1558-1622) founded Salamanca. For diplomatic reasons the title of Rector was held by a Spanish Jesuit successively at Santiago (1612) and Seville (1619). Fr John Howling SJ (1543-1599) founded Lisbon.

The material comprises of notes on the Irish Colleges at Lisbon, Poitiers, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Rome by Frs Edmund Hogan (1831-1917), John MacErlean (1870-1950) and Fergal McGrath (1895-1988). Includes lists of rectors and students of the Colleges.

Also refers to the death of the English Fr Provincial Charles Plowden SJ, and to Fr Scott’s report on how it happened. Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

Charles Doyle appears to be a serial conman (at one stage changes his name to Edward Gerard) and Charles Kennedy corresponds with fellow family members in Ireland and abroad, priests in the UK and Citeaux, France and reformatories about Charles Doyle’s criminal behaviour and imprisonment in Austria, the U. S. and France. Chief Baron Christopher Palles was a brother-in-law of Charles Doyle.1872-1899;

Describes meeting a priest from Clonakilty in the Grey Friars monastery in Aix, provides news of their mutual ‘old friends in Picardy’, describes his fortnight’s villa (holiday) at Amiens, his surroundings in Provence and states that there are 1050 boys and 63 Jesuits ‘without counting laybrothers and employe(e)s’ at St Acheul.

A file of copy letters (one original letter written by an assistant/secretary and initialled by Charles Gavan Duffy) from Charles Gavan Duffy to Martin MacDermott.

• Includes a letter agreeing that the books mentioned by MacDermott would suit the series. Remarks that stories will be needed and advises where to look for them. A note on the letter indicates that MacDermott proposed to use Duffy's name for the series. Remarks 'The name you propose for the series bangs Bannagher! There is not a living man whom it would not turn into ridicule and contempt to employ his name in such a manner; that sort of distinction is reserved for the dead (15 December 1892, 4pp).
• Includes a letter discussing a book - 100 Best Irish Poems. Considers the amount of pages each poem will require and the poets that should be included. Remarks 'I don't know what your opinion of Mr. Yates (sic) may be: mine is that his verses are the perfection of commonplace. Miss Tynan has made a collection of Irish love poems in which she selects from Mr. Yeats the amours of a kitchen maid. He is however a very self-confident critic; and has recently disparaged Davis and MacCarthy and declared that the Spirit of the Nation contained nothing of any value except Ingram's song.' (17 September 1895, 4pp).
• Includes a letter praising MacDermott's Ballads and Songs. Expresses his joy at reading some of the entries but remarks 'At the same time I would be glad if there were two less of Davis and three less of Ferguson to be replaced by a specimen of Katherine Tynan, Ellen O'Leary, Dora Sigerson...' I do not like Kings...’. (30 October [ ], 3pp). Refers to articles he wishes to contribute to the Irish Monthly. (nd, 4pp). Discusses his future career ‘I have for the last week been visiting various people of importance with a view to choosing a profession, I want to be earning soon; I believe that my mathematics...will help me in Engineering - but I never live except when I am on the water.’ Refers also to his writing and describes it as ‘...the work of a boy, it is like those nasty little plums that come on the young wild plumtrees in the forest of Marly.’ Continues ‘But if you ask me why I write as I do, I will tell you this much: that in the circle of newspapers of criticism of perfectly turned verses, of madly-hunted ideas, I am all at sea. I would have it that no man should write who was not a zealot for something and when I desire, I desire the hills and the sea. I desire the faces of men and women not some unjust imitations. And I desire above all that free and happy forbearance and that perfection of charity which this country is absolutely unable to give.’ (5 February 1889, 4pp). Refers to writing and editing and remarks ‘If I ever become an editor I shall accept everything that touches me - irrespective of merit and shall refuse all well known names. There is a club in Paris called “La Decadence” into which no one cannot (sic) be admitted whose work has not been refused three times!’ (20 April 1889, 4pp). Refers to the Great War and remarks that he is looking forward to it ‘It will sweep Europe like a broom, it will make Kings jump like coffee beans on the roaster...’. Asks Fr. Russell to choose a composition from a ‘batch’. (30 June 1889, 4pp). Enquires why some of his verses have not appeared in the Irish Monthly. Remarks ‘I didn’t love it (The Irish Monthly) half as much as I should have done if my “poor thing but mine own” had been in it.’ (nd, 2pp). Refers to a visit he made to Ireland. Observes that ‘The Country is getting richer and it is high time. The Irish have too much political sense to boast of any success: they insist rather on what they need than on what they have, which is the right way to go about politics; but very soon people over here will wake up to find Ireland transformed.’ (1 January 1910, 2pp). Remarks that suggestions have been made to him to write a Catholic essay on the history of England ‘...but the only thing I can afford to write is a Catholic School history...’ (13 January 1911, 1p).

Concludes 'I will feel very happy if I can put some new weapons in the learned hands of such an apologist as you are and contribute in that way to the defence of our dearest traditions.'

File of postcards and notes from the artist, Evie Hone to Fr Daniel Shields SJ (29 September 1941-11 August 1952) in which pleasantries are given and items of news, ‘I expect you heard that Michael Healy died last Mon. I feel very sad for myself but he could not have recovered to work’ (29 September 1941). Evie Hone writes from Kilkenny, Paris and Rathfarnham, Dublin. This material was found in the room of Fr Daniel Shields SJ after his death. Includes a newspaper cutting with an image of Evie Hone and her last stained-glass window, an obituary and a colour sketch of Mary and Child, by Evie Hone.

Account book of Irish Jesuit property. Includes a description of the finances of the Irish Mission account, written by Fr John Fullam SJ. Remarks 'In 1760 this mission had in Paris a capital of £1000 ster. including the deposits of individuals and what belonged to different residences. By the persecution which ensued the whole was nearly despaired of when by Fr Crookshank's activity and cleverness about half that sum was recovered and transmitted to Ireland where Mr Ward placed it as occasions presented.'

Loose account sheet of the Toulouse Province in account with the Irish Province. Three Irish Jesuits, Christopher Bellew, John O'Carroll and O'Brien are mentioned in the accounts. All three were studying Theology in the Toulouse Province at this time.

Letter to Robert Haly SJ (1st year theology) Fribourg, Switzerland from F.S. O'Mahony SJ, St Louis College, Aix, in which he describes his journey from Lyons to Avignon and Aix, the Jesuit College at Aix which ‘contains 300 boys & 20 ecclesiastiques…we have here 9 priests & 12 scholastics’ and his current work editing ‘a Selection from the minor greek Poets’. Includes a rough sketch of the plan of the College.

Letter from S.F. O'Mahony, Seminaire du Grand, Montrouge, Paris to his father (Martin Mahony) on the question of where he shall minister ‘…it is of no Consequence that I serve my God in one climate preferably to another provided I accomplish faithfully his ever adorable will, all I ask is to be allowed to follow his voice which evidently calls me to the Society, and of that you can entertain no reasonable doubt. The rest is not essential, so I abandon it to whatever dispositions may be made by you and my Superiors. As I am of an age at which tis customary in France to receive the Ecclesiastical tonsure, I hope you will have no objection to my contracting this preliminary obligation to persevere, begging you to obtain the necessary documents from Our Bishop to whose prayers I wish to be recommended.…I received two letters from the Clongonians but decline answering as I feel every day more & more the necessity of absolute retirement and complete sequestration to enable myself to meet with some confidence the serious duties which will be one day incumbent on me & which I learn in my solitude to appreciate.’ On reverse is a letter in French, by Fr Jean Baptiste Gury SJ, Master of Novices, Montrouge, Paris, France to the father of S.F. O'Mahony regarding his son's entry into the Society.

Letter from Sr Mary, Hospice Civil, Sarthe, Sable, France to Dr Charles Russell concerning the conduct of Fr James Murphy. Remarks '...Mr Murphy behaved very unpleasantly to us and personally to me.' Remarks that he has been asked to leave the abbey.
