Includes a letter referring to the Archbishop's wish that the Jesuit Fathers 'take up the absolute care of this (St. Patrick's) college and he will give us two additional things viz.: the parish of Richmond and the ground for a University College...The Bishop will sign a document giving it over to us exclusively and declaring that it can never be taken from us unless we wish to give it up.' Continues 'As to the boys it is another matter - I wish to be quite fair and just - and it is right that my husband should have some and it seems natural that he should have the boys - while the girls who need a mother's care so much should be left to me. Why should I have to go lonely to Church for the rest of my life?'.

Continues 'I do not at all despair of getting the proviso inserted in the Lords.'

Letter from Fr Edmund O'Reilly SJ, Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare to Dr Charles Russell concerning the religious upbringing of the children of William Bliss. Offers his opinion on the case. Remarks 'Something depends on the age of the children. The eldest girl, being fit for school is probably old enough to be in danger of becoming a thorough Protestant under the mother's care.' Continues 'He (William Bliss) ought without delay to appoint a testamentary guardian and to take care the document is all right in it's form and execution....'.

Letter from Fr Henry Young to Charles Young SJ and discusses the matter of the Stations of the Cross and asserts that there should be a fixed form of erection of the Stations, i.e., from left to right. Refers to Gardiner Street as ‘your Xavier Church’.

Letter from Chichester Parkinson Fortescue, Irish Office, London to Dr. Charles Russell concerning grants paid to Maynooth College and the '[over issuing]' of money. Remarks that he discussed the matter with Mr Gladstone 'Mr Gladstone's answer is that it is a question of law and that the Audit [Committee]...discovered an illegal issue of public money...'.

Letter from Rev. Henry Young, St Joseph's to his cousin Rev. Henry Lynch concerning a small bottle of water. Remarks that the water might have been '...distilled from the bones or other relicks of St. Nicholas of Bari. Remarks that he was a curate in St. Nicholas's new church in Kinsealy and it was to this church that the bottle of water was brought by a Rev. William.' Refers to the death of Rev. James and a parcel of papers including a manuscript of Bellarmin's Catechism. Remarks that he would like the manuscript to be copied '...which I shall willingly do but gradually and scrupulous by following James's copy with corrections before me for copying any work imprints more the subject on the mind than hasty reading.'

Includes a letter written from Melbourne describing Prince Alfred's visit to the city. Describes the situation in St Patrick's College and remarks that its reputation is rising but that further money is needed. Remarks 'We will not be able to work the college even as a day-school for another year without help.' (26 November 1867, 4pp). Includes a letter concerning remarks made by Fr Lentaigne SJ to Fr Dalton SJ (Superior of the Mission). Refers to the estrangement between the Bishops and some of the priests and remarks 'It appears to me...that neither the Bishop nor the leading priests in the city were ever friendly, but that they required of us to work for them and to perform those duties especially which demanded a great deal of time and labour and for which there was no remuneration whatever...' Describes his surroundings (30 December 1872, 4pp). Asks Dr Russell to send him a book so that he can complete an article for the Dublin Review (3 December 1872, 3pp).

Letter from Fr Peter Gallwey SJ to [ ], from Manresa House, Roehampton, England. Declares that both of the Brs Brady are ‘below par’, and states that O’Farrell and Gartlan will be welcome. Adds that he has ‘no satisfactory news of Napoleon’s last days’.

A file of letters from Fr John Ffrench SJ (all except one dated 2 September 1870 are written from Gesú, Rome) to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ (term 20 April 1870 - 17 March 1877). Fr Ffrench's letters were written in his capacity as English Assistant to Fr General. As a result all of the letters have an official slant. Fr Ffrench, SJ died in Rome on 31 May 1873. Includes an index/précis to the letters by Fr James Rabbitte SJ.

Letter from Fr Torquatus Armellini SJ, writing from Rome, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. In reply to the latter's query in relation to the training of a novice master for Ireland. Fr Armellini recommends Fr Van der Hoeven SJ, Rector and Master of novices at Arlon in Belgium. Refers to Fr Walsh’s statement in relation to a villa house in Ireland. Asks Fr Walsh to reply soon to the Fr General in relation to ‘the Diocesan Seminary’; suggests that the Bishop might have changed his mind in relation to handing it over to the Society. Reports on the health of the Pope. Refers to the portraits and drawings of Fr Ffrench, which had not yet arrived in Dublin.

Letter from Fr Torquatus Armellini SJ, writing from the American College in Rome, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Declines, with thanks, the latter's ‘offering’. Refers to events in Rome, and reports that the Fr General and others will not leave the country ‘till they see what can be done and where they may settle themselves.’ Announces that he is to stay in Rome for some time ‘for the communications with the Propaganda &c.’. Asks Fr. Walsh to send faculties to him to distribute.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from St. Beuno's College, Wales to [ ]. Reports on the health of Mr Francis Ryan SJ (b.1844), and reports that he be removed to Ireland, so as to be near to a doctor. States that he has written to the [English] Fr Provincial ‘about the laybrother’, but he has not heard yet whether he may receive him. Adds that the Fr Provincial is proposing to send them [in St. Beuno's] ‘two of the superannuated Brothers’. Refers to the health of other residents: Hughes, O’Connor, O'Flynn and Daly. Suggests that his correspondent communicate with Fr (Robert) Whitty (Fr Provincial) in relation to ordinations of Irish men.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Florence, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Encloses a lithograph of Blessed Faber (not included), and offers to send a copy or two of the life of Fr B[also]. Reports on events in Florence, including the attempt by a mob to drive the Jesuits out. Announced that the decree ‘de Virtutibus’ is to be promulgated. Also refers to the promotion of Fr Tarquini SJ to the Cardinalate, which the Pope did ‘as a mark of esteem to the Society’ during their persecution .

Letter from Fr J. B. Wenig SJ, Rector of [ ], writing from Ceniponte, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ, in relation to the progress of Daly’s studies there.

Letter from Sr M. Catherine of the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy, St Mary’s, Limerick, to Fr Stephen Farrell SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin. Conveys her thanks, through the latter, to the anonymous benefactor, who gave a donation of £100 for the use of her Convent. Includes a handwritten receipt for the above donation, signed by Sister Mary Catherine Bren.

Letter from F. J. MacCormack, Ballaghadreen to Dr Charles Russell asking D. Russell to support Mr. Myles H. Jordan for the appointment of Resident Magistrate.

Letter from Dr Cruise to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ.States that he has examined Mr Higgins, and finds ‘no positive impediment to his entering upon the life of a Jesuit’.

Letter from Fr George Lambert SJ, writing from the Gesù in Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Writes to the latter at the request of the Fr General to draw the attention of Fr Walsh ‘to the great importance of avoiding anything which might give the Engl. Government a pretext to quarrel with us’. Adds that the prospects of the Society retaining their houses and churches decrease every day.
