O'Curry apologises for the delay explaining that some volumes he wished to purchase were not available and that he fell ill on two occasions. O'Curry refers to the death of his son in 1857 and his wife in 1858. Concludes that he is still working on the Brehon Laws and that he has published the first twenty one lectures given by him to the Catholic University.

Describes his journey from Rome to Munich and the cities he visited along the way. Copy of letter from Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Addressed to English prelates. Refers to the suppression of the Society, to the establishment of Stonyhurst as a seminary to supply missioners to other parts of the English province, and to the papal brief obtained by the College from Pope Pius VI. States that, in spite of this brief, restrictions were placed on the members of the College, which forced each of them to serve the mission in his own native vicariate, and prevented them from being presented to ‘a different V.A.’. Refers to reports spread by Sir Hippesley and others, which had a negative impact on Stonyhurst, and to other complaints against the institution, including that made by Dr Gregory Stapleton. States that a papal decree re-confirmed the rights of Stonyhurst, and explains that this document may not have been communicated to his (Plowden’s) present addressees.

I saw the Holy Father for the third time yesterday…He is the most good natured man you ever saw, full of simplicity and holiness and warm heartedness; and he was greatly interested in all we were doing in the Church. I am glad you report so favourably of Father Bannon’s health. All the same I think it would do him good to have a change after his many colds and bronchitis.’

Thanks the latter for purchasing the two milch cows, but explains that his (Hughes’) superior, the Provincial Fr Brown, did not want the two store heifers that were purchased at the same time, and that he had already made this fact clear to Fr McCartan. Sends the latter a cheque for the cows.
