A file relating to 'St Stephen's', the magazine of the University College, Dublin and the Catholic University School of Medicine, Cecilia Street, Dublin and the removal of the medallion from the cover of the magazine, and insertion of the Catholic University of Ireland. Includes a letter from Joseph Brennan, Honorary Secretary to the Representative Council, Catholic University School of Medicine to Fr William Delany SJ referring to the medallion. Remarks, ‘..it was not their (the Representative Council) intention to substitute a medallion of the Catholic University for the existing medallion. Their object simply was to remove the false impression conveyed by the wording of the medallion, that the magazine belonged exclusively or mainly to the students of University College, and was not the joint organ of the students of University College and of the Catholic University School of Medicine.’ (22 March 1906, 2pp). Fr William Delany SJ established St Stephen's, as a magazine for University College, Dublin, and not for the Catholic University of Ireland. Includes list of subscribers to 'St. Stephen's' (March 1906) and accounts (1905-06).

This disagreement seems to precipitate the end of 'St. Stephen's : a record of University life', Vol. II No. 12 (May, 1906).

A file relating to the controversy surrounding the Apostolic and Lay Schools, Mungret College and the separation of the two schools following intervention by the Bishop of Limerick and a Decree of Propaganda. Includes correspondence relating to the valuation of the property and the question of the ownership of the Mungret property. Includes a certificate of valuation (25 June 1921, 7pp) and various financial accounts. Includes a ground floor plan and front elevation of Mungret College. Finally, in 1928 a further session of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith decided the transference of the Lay School should not be insisted on but that the two schools should be administered separately (21 April 1928, 1p). Includes letters from Michael Curly, Archbishop of Baltimore offering his support to Mungret College. A file relating to the controversy between Dr Edward Thomas O'Dwyer, Bishop of Limerick and Mungret College concerning the admission of lay boys to the College. The file contains manuscript material written by Fr Thomas Morrissey SJ. In a summary he remarks that the Bishop saw the presence of lay students at Mungret 'as a threat to his seminary' (nd, 1p). Includes correspondence, and prospectus for Mungret College, 1882, Annual reports of the Irish Apostolic School, Mungret, 1889 and 1895.

Letters and legal opinion on the 'Mungret Building Case' and the draft scheme for the Agricultural School.

A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Clongowes refused to pay the principal sum or the interest Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Rector, Fr James Corboy SJ, Mungret College remarking that he has instructed Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector of Clongowes to pay £332.15.4 to Mungret. Remarks that Fr General decided that Clongowes should pay half the interest due on the debt and '…put an end finally to all disputes about the debt.' (25 June 1917, 2pp).

Includes a letter from the Bishop insisting that his permission is sought and remarking that the Jesuit Order is not exempt.

A file relating to the abandonment of a procession that was due to take place to celebrate St Patrick's day in Galway. The decision was made to abandon the procession after it became apparent that the IRA had been invited to take part. Includes a lengthy letter from Fr John Joy SJ, St Ignatius College, Galway to Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ concerning the situation. Remarks that Fr O'Farrell, SJ, as President of the Gaelic League, was invited to be Chief Marshal and became very upset when he discovered that the IRA were to take part. Remarks that he (Fr Joy) had an interview with the Bishop who was very angry. Explains how it was decided to abandon the procession (13 March 1933, 12pp).

Includes correspondence between Fr Bates and Fr James Finucane SJ, in which the latter attempts to identify subjects in various photos, and also gives information on the activities and careers of several ex-pupils. Also includes letters from Fr Peter Halpin SJ, which contain memories of his days as a pupil at the Crescent. Correspondence between Fr Redmond Roche SJ and Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon re. the purchase of a playing field. Discussion of the two fields proposed as possible alternatives to the Crescent field: Cussen's field and Baker's field. One letter is accompanied by a detailed map of the proposed ground [in Baker's field] (included).

Documents including letters from solicitors and Jesuits, and newspaper cuttings, re. CIE's proposed compulsory purchase of the Crescent College playing field, owned by Mrs Pearse. Includes a number of letters from Irish Fr Provincial MacMahon to Fr Roche, Rector of the College on the subject (9 September 1945 - 15 June 1947,13 items). Some documents contain suggestions re. possible alternative fields, e.g., Cussen's field and Baker's field. Suggestion that the field be bought from Mrs. Pearse.

Letters from Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ to Fr Redmond Roche SJ in relation to the proposed purchase of Doyle's yard from Michael Doyle.

Documents on Jesuits' property rights in relation to the Crescent House. Handwritten notes regarding the position of the community in relation to Maunsell's house, in light of the fact that no rent had been paid since 1907. Includes a quoted opinion of Fr Masterson on the matter, and some extracts from legal documents in Latin.

Documents relating to the events organised to mark the centenary, including the staging by the Old Crescent Players of the play 'The First Legion' in March and April 1956. Includes letters addressed to Fr Robert Tyndall SJ, Rector of the College, in reply to his invitation to attend the play. Also includes a souvenir programme, a poster, and photographs of the cast of the play, as well as newspaper announcements and reviews. A newspaper article from January of the same year reports on a sermon preached by Fr J. B. Stephenson SJ, Mungret College, on the important links between the Jesuits and Limerick.

A file of letters between Irish Frs Provincial Laurence Kieran and John R MacMahon and Clongowes Wood College SJ regarding communications with the Department of Defence. The mater being considered was one where the Deptartment of Defence sought to use Clongowes as a place for storage of equipment, and in the event of an emergency, that a part of it might be used as a hospital. The advice was that Clongowes should not invite the Department of defence in, but they might have no choice. Initial letters are between Fr Fergal McGrath SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ and Irish Fr Provincial L Kieran SJ as well as with Commandant PJ Delaney of the Department of Defence. Fr McGrath also sought the advice of his House Consultors, Fr William Dargan SJ, Henry King SJ and Cyril Power SJ. Subsequent letters were exchanged between Fr William Dargan SJ - who had been deputed to negotiate with the Ministers of Defence, Mr Oscar Traynor and Mr Francis Aiken, along with Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ.

In the event of an "emergency", the Provincial had wanted that Jesuit community members from Milltown Park and Rathfarnham Castle might be accommodated at Clongowes, along with the local community, and remaining staff and students. This was eventually accepted by the Department of Defence, as only a small portion of the buildings would be required to function as a hospital.

A file of letters from Mr Edward J Boyd Barrett SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ. Matters covered in these letters have to do with his writings, and the censorship of same by the Society before publication; the circumstances of and a request to assist his brother Mr Charles Boyd-Barrett; the setting up of the "Clongowes Social Work Club'. Included also is a letter of approval for one article from Fr Dominic Kelly SJ, who had acted as one of the censors. Mr Edward J Boyd Barrett was a scholastic on Regency at Clongowes Wood College SJ during this period of the letters.

A file of House Consultor letters from Fr James Daly SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan. These letters are written by Fr Daly to the Irish Fr Provincial on a variety of matters concerning the community and college. Fr Daly was at the time the Prefect of Studies to 1917 and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community. Fr Daly's health began to deteriorate in 1917 and he was changed to Coláiste Iognáid SJ for one year as a teacher. He was reassigned to the Clongowes Wood College community in 1918, and his mission was to care for his health. He spent some time over these years at St John of God's, Stillorgan, Dublin, from where he wrote the final letter (22 December 1920, 2pp).

Letter from Daniel O'Connell, London to Richard Barrett, editor of the 'Pilot' newspaper, Suffolk Street, Dublin, to be published as an open letter to the people of Ireland. ‘This is the first of a series of Letters which I intend to publish on the present state and future prospects of our Country including the best suggestions I can give for regulating your conduct in the manner most calculated to mitigate the evils of the one and to insure the amelioration of the other.’ (Letter is divided into five envelopes, each containing nine pages. Franked 6 April 1833.) 45pp

Richard Barrett, editor of the Pilot was prosecuted by the government for having published on 8 April 1833, the last letter. He was tried and found guilty, imprisoned for six months and fined £100. During his imprisonment, O'Connell paid Barrett a total of £656, consisting of his £100 fine, £150 in American subscriptions and weekly sums amounting to £406.

While various studios, both in Ireland and elsewhere, were responsible for the images, the most frequent photographer was A. Lesage, ‘Photographer to the Catholic Hierarchy’, 40 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin. As well as studio portraits, the album contains a number of deathbed scenes and mass cards (PC/4/ 8, 10, 12). Two more informal photographs from Sydney were adhered to the albums front flyleaf and back cover (PC/4/1, PC/4/52).
This collection derives from an album of portraits of members of the Society of Jesus in the period 1853-1910.
