Copy of letter from Cardinal di Pietro to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ. Refers to the appeal made by the prelates of Ireland to Rome in relation to the will of the late Fr Richard Callaghan. Claims that the latter, according to an oath sworn on 23 August 1793, should have left his property to Fr Betagh, and not to Stone. Demands that Stone transmit to Rome an authentic copy of the Pope’s alleged rescript, by which Callaghan believed himself to legitimately free to dispose of the funds of the ex-Jesuits in favour of Stone (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the reply to it from Fr Stone, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Copy of letter from Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ to Cardinal di Pietro - reply to the latter’s letter of 7 October 1809. Refers to Archbishop Troy’s appeal to Rome in relation to the will of Fr Richard Callaghan, and reminds the Cardinal of the oath sworn by all English priests to renounce all pretensions of the Holy See to interfere in civil affairs within Great Britain. Also alludes to the dangers of such interference especially when the Holy See is subject to the rule of Napoleon Buonaparte. Discusses the will of Fr Callaghan in relation to the agreement made by Irish ex-Jesuits in 1793, and asserts that no promise was ever made to leave Jesuit property to the Irish prelates. (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the one to which it replies, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

‘Note on Sir J. Coxe Hippisley’. Recounts Sir Hippisley’s involvement in the Catholic question, and the ‘appendixes to his speech on the issue, which was rejected by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst’. Refers to some of his views, including his contention in relation to the transfer of Jesuit funds from England to Ireland.

Reminds him to send a book for the Prince of Butera. Refers to the landing of French troops, the defence effort by the Sicilians, and the subsequent surrender of some French, and the flight of others back to Naples, upon the arrival of the British troops. States that Paccanari ‘has taken a wife & walks the streets of Rome with her with shameless effrontery.’ Expresses the fear that the Irish have complained of him (Kenney) ‘for having led F. Stone astray’.

We have received no information whatever on this subject, and only know that three of you are actually in Dublin'. Remarks that both himself and Fr St. Leger have been ordained. Remarks that he and others are confused '...on account of this Roman Rescript on the Veto.' Continues 'It is considered here that the treatment was most contemptible to the Irish Bishops, Clergy and people.' Refers to Fr St Leger's family who '...are teasing me to write to you to know do you expect him. The Bishop told me it would be well to know as if there was no expectation of him that the matter should be broken to his poor mother.'

Copy of letter from Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Addressed to English prelates. Refers to the suppression of the Society, to the establishment of Stonyhurst as a seminary to supply missioners to other parts of the English province, and to the papal brief obtained by the College from Pope Pius VI. States that, in spite of this brief, restrictions were placed on the members of the College, which forced each of them to serve the mission in his own native vicariate, and prevented them from being presented to ‘a different V.A.’. Refers to reports spread by Sir Hippesley and others, which had a negative impact on Stonyhurst, and to other complaints against the institution, including that made by Dr Gregory Stapleton. States that a papal decree re-confirmed the rights of Stonyhurst, and explains that this document may not have been communicated to his (Plowden’s) present addressees.

Refers to a group of Polish fathers who are destined for Clongowes but remarks that he does not know when they will commence their journey. Refers to the General Congregation and the naming of the new Fr. General. Remarks 'You have no idea of all the imbroglios which I have witnessed here; men are men everywhere. I have so little that could edify you on the subject that I judge it more prudent not to enter upon it.' Asks to be remembered to members of the community in Clongowes Wood.

Letter from Fr Joseph Tristram SJ, writing from Stonyhurst College, to [ ] in Clongowes. Refers to Fr Weston, and gives permission for him to visit his friends. Announces that he intends to come to Ireland with some pupils, who are to go to Dublin, and states that they are to travel ‘by the Waterloo steam packet’. Also refers to the death of the English Fr Provincial Charles Plowden SJ, and to Fr Scott’s report on how it happened. Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

O'Mahony, Seminaire du Grand, Montrouge, Paris to his father (Martin Mahony) on the question of where he shall minister ‘…it is of no Consequence that I serve my God in one climate preferably to another provided I accomplish faithfully his ever adorable will, all I ask is to be allowed to follow his voice which evidently calls me to the Society, and of that you can entertain no reasonable doubt. The rest is not essential, so I abandon it to whatever dispositions may be made by you and my Superiors. As I am of an age at which tis customary in France to receive the Ecclesiastical tonsure, I hope you will have no objection to my contracting this preliminary obligation to persevere, begging you to obtain the necessary documents from Our Bishop to whose prayers I wish to be recommended.…I received two letters from the Clongonians but decline answering as I feel every day more & more the necessity of absolute retirement and complete sequestration to enable myself to meet with some confidence the serious duties which will be one day incumbent on me & which I learn in my solitude to appreciate.’ On reverse is a letter in French, by Fr Jean Baptiste Gury SJ, Master of Novices, Montrouge, Paris, France to the father of S.F. Letter to Robert Haly SJ, Fribourg, Switzerland from F.S. O'Mahony, SJ, St Louis College, Aix. Describes meeting a priest from Clonakilty in the Grey Friars monastery in Aix, provides news of their mutual ‘old friends in Picardy’, describes his fortnight’s villa (holiday) at Amiens, his surroundings in Provence and states that there are 1050 boys and 63 Jesuits ‘without counting laybrothers and employe(e)s’ at St Acheul.

Requests more help from the Bishop. Remarks '…they cannot…refrain from expressing their sentiments upon…the future well being of the mission in this island where they regret to say such undesirable bigotry exists together with calumny hatred and abuse of the most virulent description is daily and yearly preached and propagated against their religion…they believe it the only means…of upholding successfully the Catholic Religion in this small island would be to appoint to the Mission and to its management here an able experienced clergyman…'

O'Mahony SJ, St Louis College, Aix, in which he describes his journey from Lyons to Avignon and Aix, the Jesuit College at Aix which ‘contains 300 boys & 20 ecclesiastiques…we have here 9 priests & 12 scholastics’ and his current work editing ‘a Selection from the minor greek Poets’. Includes a rough sketch of the plan of the College.

Letter from Bishop Penswick, Liverpool to Fr Matthew Gahan SJ, Isle of Man concerning a visit he had intended to make to the island. Remarks that because the habeas corpus act has not been sanctioned by the legislators he is going to postpone his visit. Remarks 'I have often thought of you and even expected to be in a situation to relieve your wants; whenever my hopes are realised I will not overlook you.'

Letter from Fr Edward Scott SJ, writing from London, to an unnamed Jesuit father. Refers to two enclosed letters (not included). States that Mr Glover ‘still lingers at Rome’, and reports that luminous crosses have been visible for months over summits of the Masques of the Turks in a city in Bulgaria. Refers to the failure of St. Francis’ Bill, and to ‘Orange Bigots’. Gives a brief statement of accounts.
