Holograph letter from James FitzMaurice, St Malo, France to Fr General Everard Mercurian SJ.

The Irish Colleges were established chronologically as follows: Lisbon 1590, Salamanca 1592, Santiago de Compostela 1605, Seville 1608 or 1612, Rome 1628 and Poitiers 1674. Irish Jesuits were involved in the establishment or running of the colleges at Lisbon, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela and Seville. The colleges were established with the aim of educating and training students for the priesthood and acted as service and social centres for Irish religious communities all over Europe. Fr Thomas White SJ (1558-1622) founded Salamanca. For diplomatic reasons the title of Rector was held by a Spanish Jesuit successively at Santiago (1612) and Seville (1619). Fr John Howling SJ (1543-1599) founded Lisbon.

The material comprises of notes on the Irish Colleges at Lisbon, Poitiers, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Rome by Frs Edmund Hogan (1831-1917), John MacErlean (1870-1950) and Fergal McGrath (1895-1988). Includes lists of rectors and students of the Colleges.

Account book of Irish Jesuit property. Includes a description of the finances of the Irish Mission account, written by Fr John Fullam SJ. Remarks 'In 1760 this mission had in Paris a capital of £1000 ster. including the deposits of individuals and what belonged to different residences. By the persecution which ensued the whole was nearly despaired of when by Fr Crookshank's activity and cleverness about half that sum was recovered and transmitted to Ireland where Mr Ward placed it as occasions presented.'

Letter from S.F. O'Mahony, Seminaire du Grand, Montrouge, Paris to his father (Martin Mahony) on the question of where he shall minister ‘…it is of no Consequence that I serve my God in one climate preferably to another provided I accomplish faithfully his ever adorable will, all I ask is to be allowed to follow his voice which evidently calls me to the Society, and of that you can entertain no reasonable doubt. The rest is not essential, so I abandon it to whatever dispositions may be made by you and my Superiors. As I am of an age at which tis customary in France to receive the Ecclesiastical tonsure, I hope you will have no objection to my contracting this preliminary obligation to persevere, begging you to obtain the necessary documents from Our Bishop to whose prayers I wish to be recommended.…I received two letters from the Clongonians but decline answering as I feel every day more & more the necessity of absolute retirement and complete sequestration to enable myself to meet with some confidence the serious duties which will be one day incumbent on me & which I learn in my solitude to appreciate.’ On reverse is a letter in French, by Fr Jean Baptiste Gury SJ, Master of Novices, Montrouge, Paris, France to the father of S.F. O'Mahony regarding his son's entry into the Society.

Letter to Robert Haly SJ, Fribourg, Switzerland from F.S. O'Mahony, SJ, St Louis College, Aix. Describes meeting a priest from Clonakilty in the Grey Friars monastery in Aix, provides news of their mutual ‘old friends in Picardy’, describes his fortnight’s villa (holiday) at Amiens, his surroundings in Provence and states that there are 1050 boys and 63 Jesuits ‘without counting laybrothers and employe(e)s’ at St Acheul.

Letter to Robert Haly SJ (1st year theology) Fribourg, Switzerland from F.S. O’Mahony SJ, St Louis College, Aix, in which he describes his journey from Lyons to Avignon and Aix, the Jesuit College at Aix which ‘contains 300 boys & 20 ecclesiastiques…we have here 9 priests & 12 scholastics’ and his current work editing ‘a Selection from the minor greek Poets’. Includes a rough sketch of the plan of the College.

Letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ, writing to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ Church of St Francis, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin. Suggests that the latter hold his Consultation at Clongowes, and that it be deferred until after Easter. Refers to the books brought back from Paris by Mr O'Grady, and asks Fr Bracken to let him know which ones to keep. Reports on a Novena he participated in, and also on the exercise he has been taking recently.

Remarks that she was then offered a job on '...Fine Ghaedheal by my former "boss"...Bob Brennan and we are working together very harmoniously linking up the Irish race. Our Free State friends are...trying to smash us as they would smash the Republic and every Irish institution but we are going come out on top in spite of them.

File of postcards and notes from the artist, Evie Hone to Fr Daniel Shields SJ (29 September 1941-11 August 1952) in which pleasantries are given and items of news, ‘I expect you heard that Michael Healy died last Mon. I feel very sad for myself but he could not have recovered to work’ (29 September 1941). Evie Hone writes from Kilkenny, Paris and Rathfarnham, Dublin. This material was found in the room of Fr Daniel Shields SJ after his death.
