Letter to Irish Fr Provincial Cecil McGarry from Sr Mary Regis, Mercy Convent, Doon, County Limerick, following Fr Leonard Sheil's death. Encloses letters sent to her from Fr Sheil over a number of years and press-cuttings relating to him, in the hope they might be useful to the Society when writing Fr Sheil's biography. States ‘I thought I would like to do a little for him after all he did for me.…When he started his missions in England I used to make pictures & pieties to help him & send them to the different addresses. He sent me accounts of these missions…He never thought of himself, his aim was to use everything he could to bring souls to God… I have kept letters of his since 1939 & all the years of the war & until he wrote before Christmas to announce his illness’ (Aug. 1968, 4pp). Encloses seven letters from Fr Sheil, thanking her for sending badges and medals and discussing her health and his missions. Includes letter in which he remarks ‘…thanks so much for all your lovely pictures and things. They are immensely valued over here. Sometimes indeed religion is not valued, but I hope that these pictures etc. will make it impossible for them to forget the lovely things of Our Faith. One little boy brought five Protestant pals, mostly bigger than himself, to the mission at West Hartlepool. I have had many conversions of people years away from Mass and the Sacraments. Many others have rejected me. The [leak]age of the children when they leave school, & have no Catholic school, and no good parents, is frightful. I start missions again on January 8th at Coventry and near Northampton. They will be very tough, so help me with your prayers. I bless each house I enter, put them on their knees, if they don’t refuse, and instal (sic.) a holy picture’ (28 Dec. 19--, 2pp). Remarks '…you can act as you say we both trust and rely on you and the Provincial for safeguarding our interests during our interests during our lives after which all will be yours.'

A file containing Fr Brendan Barry's observations on the Lay School and Apostolic School, Mungret College. The notes include Fr Barry's concerns over the finances of the school. Fr Barry was superior of the Apostolic School from 1957 - 1959. The notes were compiled by Fr Redmnd F. Roche SJ who succeeded Fr Barry in 1959 and remained as Superior until 1967.

Remarks 'His "Children's Ballad Rosary" is a beautiful bequest to his fellow countrymen and their children.' Remembers fondly the time he spent with Mrs O'Hagan and her husband.

Advises Fr Tuite that the Fr General wishes that ‘more important matters’ be addressed to himself and in Latin. Refers to the Australian mission and its need for ‘some young blood’. Reminds Fr Tuite that he and the Fr General are awaiting his letter about 'Montgret'. Also refers to the Dublin College, and to Cardinal McCabe, to whom Fr Armellini is to visit; and to a proposed convent of the Sacred Heart at Sydney.

Sends the congratulations of the Fr General, who was particularly pleased by the part played by Fr Delany. Hopes that ‘the business of the college may be brought to an equally favourable termination’. Refers to the case of a member of the Limerick community, whose removal is left to the discretion of Fr Weld's correspondent. Adds that the Fr General is anxious that the man in question should be removed as his behaviour could cause scandal. Also refers to the ‘Montgret lease’, and states that if this Limerick diocesan seminary succeeds it ‘well may lead the way to very important work for the Society in Ireland’. Discusses the importance of helping the development of the Australian province, and refers to the sending of Frs Thomas Keating and Joseph Brennan there.
Note: The name of the man in Limerick, who may be removed from there is blacked out in this letter. The letter is accompanied by an envelope marked: ‘F. Rabbitte; 1. Letter enclosed for archives. 2. I am keeping the other (two) letters; [ ]’.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to the latter's letter on 12 March, and addresses some of the points in it. Refers to Fr Tuite's proposals in relation to Montgret, and passes on the Father General's authorisation to send Fr Brennan to Australia. Also discusses the Terna for Australia, and an offer to the Society of 10 acres of the Catholic Reserve. With regard to the question of the New Zealand mission raised by Fr Dalton in his letter, asks Fr Tuite's opinion on the proposed removal of the missioners from there to Australia. Asks for a copy of the Irish Catholic Directory for 1882.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Gives an outline of the reasons that the Fr General accepted ‘Montgret’ in Limerick, viz. he wishes to put the Apostolic School in Limerick ‘on a firm foundation’, and to provide a seminary for the Bishop's students. Assures Fr Tuite that the Fr General is aware of the current financial difficulties experienced by the Irish Province. Refers to the Zambesi mission, which will be headed by Fr Ronan, and suggests that the lay brother staff of Montgret be recruited from among the candidates for the mission. Adds that the Fr General is also very eager that the Irish province’s plans for a Dublin College come to fruition.

A file relating to the will of John Timothy Donnelly, Denmark Street, Dublin in which he bequeathed the residue of his estate, amongst others to Rev. Robert Haly SJ and Rev. Henry Joseph Rorke SJ, Clongowes, County Kildare and appoints Rev. Robert Haly SJ, as one of his executors.

Copy will of Nicholas John O'Neill, 4 Belleview Terrace, Limerick in which he bequeathed £2,700 to the Apostolic School at Mungret, County Limerick, the money to be used to educate Irish boys who would not be able to afford the expense of their maintenance and education for the priesthood.

Will of Joseph Hannan, Caherelly Castle, County Limerick. Bequeaths a portion of his estate to the Irish Provincial of the Society of Jesus so that masses can be offered for his soul. Instructs that £52 that he borrowed from the Society of Jesus be returned.
