A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Clongowes refused to pay the principal sum or the interest Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Rector, Fr James Corboy SJ, Mungret College remarking that he has instructed Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector of Clongowes to pay £332.15.4 to Mungret. Remarks that Fr General decided that Clongowes should pay half the interest due on the debt and '…put an end finally to all disputes about the debt.' (25 June 1917, 2pp).

Letter from Charles Russell, Maynooth College, County Kildare to his mother (Anne McEvoy) telling her about his life as a student at Maynooth. Describes his day when he rises at 6 o'clock and the various chores he must attend to. Remarks 'We have a great deal of praying to do here.' Continues 'The lay college is quite separate from the Ecclesiastic and it is one of the rules not to hold any intercourse with those in the other college.'

Letter from Charles Russell, Maynooth College, County Kildare to his sister Anne Russell. Remarks that there was an eclipse of the sun 'I observed it very accurately. When I saw it first a very small segment was obscured but in a short time more than one third was covered. I never had a perfect idea of an eclipse until today. Describes what it is like to be studying in Maynooth. Remarks that he has a bad place in the study hall as the people around him talk. Refers to his room 'I am beginning already to feel the cold at night. I suppose it is because my curtains are so bad if they may be called curtains which are all full of holes and as thin as wafer.' Letter from Chichester Parkinson Fortescue, Irish Office, London to Dr. Charles Russell concerning grants paid to Maynooth College and the '[over issuing]' of money. Remarks that he discussed the matter with Mr Gladstone 'Mr Gladstone's answer is that it is a question of law and that the Audit [Committee]...discovered an illegal issue of public money...'.

A file relating to Mrs Louisa McCann (sister of Fr Laurence Kieran SJ) and the will of her late husband Mr Arthur McCann. The file relates to the financial difficulties experienced by Louisa McCann following the death of her husband, due in part, to the failure of the trustees of her marriage settlement to ensure that £20,000 was put in trust for her widowhood. Her brother Robert Kieran acted as her solicitor. However, it would appear from correspondence between Louisa and her brother Robert and Fr Kieran SJ that Louisa and Robert fell out with each other and she eventually asked Fr Kieran SJ to act as mediator and to look after the legalities of the estate. Includes a letter from Louisa McCann, Teltown, Donaghpatrick, Navan, County Meath to Fr Kieran, S.J. Remarks '...Bob's behaviour has certainly been awful and his letters all trumped up nonsense...he knows my unfortunate position and is taking advantage of it...I could not have believed he would have turned on me as he has done...I have you at any rate - otherwise I am really a very desolate creature now - struggling hard to pull along and trying not to be a burden on anyone.' Are you any the better now do you think for having inflicted this pain upon one who is poor, defenceless and alone in the world, and do you really believe that in doing this act you have given good example to your children?' Letter from Fr Joseph Tristram SJ, writing from Stonyhurst College, to [ ] in Clongowes. Refers to Fr Weston, and gives permission for him to visit his friends. Announces that he intends to come to Ireland with some pupils, who are to go to Dublin, and states that they are to travel ‘by the Waterloo steam packet’. Also refers to the death of the English Fr Provincial Charles Plowden SJ, and to Fr Scott’s report on how it happened. Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he has come into possession of ‘some good relics’, and undertakes to send some to Ireland. Refers to Fr Carbery's health, and asserts that a new rector for Clongowes should be appointed as soon as possible. Also refers to Fr Ronan, and the decorations in his church, and to [W] Lynch. Comments on the fact that ‘someone in England has written strongly against the London University’.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Reports that he has just written by direction of the Fr General to Fr Denis Murphy SJ. Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.
