Draft schedule of deeds relating to Fr John Errington's estate.

File of letters addressed to Fr Thomas Wheeler SJ. Mainly relates to financial matters as Fr Wheeler was Province Procurator at the time. Includes letters from:

• W.J. Gannon, Stillorgan, who wishes to become a lay brother with a congregation in Hatfield, England (1 December 1907);
• Fr Timothy Kenny SJ, St Patrick’s, East Melbourne thanking Fr Wheeler for ‘getting the faculties to bless Beads’ (29 July 1908);
• Fr. William Delany SJ, University College, St. Stephen’s Green requesting that a separate passbook and chequebooks be established solely for ‘the Kennedy account’, and that no money be drawn unless for the purposes expressed by Mr Kennedy. (8 September 1909);
• Fr Richard O’ Reilly S.J. , St. Stanislaus College, Tullamore detailing the offer of Mr. Joe Corcoran of £500 for the 46 acres of land belonging to the Jesuits adjacent to Tullabeg (3 November 1910) and the legalities involved in the sale of land, trustees and the future of Tullabeg (13 November 1910)

Holograph letter from Thomas Nulty, Bishop of Meath, Mullingar to Fr John Colgan SJ, St Stanislaus College, Tullabeg, Tullamore, County Offaly (redirected to 33 Great Charles Street, Dublin) regarding differences of opinion over theology and the ‘judgement by which a Bishop pronounces a Priest duly qualified by his theological acquirements to hear confessions of the people’. Informs him that he cannot give him permission to appoint any priest in his place to hear confession. Envelope with one penny stamp attached.

The papers represented in this collection relate to an estate in Counties Kildare and Westmeath inherited by Fr John Errington SJ. Although Fr Errington was a member of the English Province, it was decided that the estate he inherited should be administered by the Irish Province who should also benefit from the income (J38/61 and J38/62).

The many legal documents contained in this collection highlight the complex nature of landed estates, particularly when the Land Commission became involved. It is difficult to trace exactly how Fr Errington came to inherit the estate in counties Kildare and Westmeath. But one document in particular, J38/27, reveals some valuable information. It would appear that a gentleman by the name of John Hyacinth Nangle (died 17 September 1865) left his estate to a number of beneficiaries, namely his wife Mary Nangle, George A. Nicolls (who was also appointed executor), Sir Percy Nugent and John Errington (later Fr Errington SJ). Following the deaths of Mary Nangle and Sir Percy Nugent (who died without issue - needs checking) the latter appointed George A. Nicolls, Walter Sweetman and Margaret Nugent executors and executrix of his will. In addition George A. Nicolls was appointed a trustee of the will of John Hyacinth Nangle instead of Sir Percy Nugent, deceased. After the death of George A. Nicolls his estate passed to his brother Archibald Dowdall Nicolls. This man died without issue and it would appear that Fr Errington inherited the Garrisker estate. Letters written by Fr Errington reveal that he had little knowledge of the property (J38/63). However, in a letter to Fr Farley he refers to a Cecil Nugent and remarks 'I was under the impression that Cecil Nugent who died lately in Canada without issue was the last in the entail...' (J38/64).

A file relating to Frank Shaw's entry to the noviceship of the Society of Jesus.

Handwritten letter by Fr Patrick H O'Kelly SJ, Jesuit House, Galway, to Father [ ] St Ignatius, Galway outlining how documentation surfaced to confirm the existence of Jesuits in Athlone, the discovery of documents and the persistence of former student in researching the Jesuits in Athlone, ‘…went to the records of the Protestant Diocese of Meath’. Refers to a book 'Opus Catecheticum' and 'Regulae Societatis Iesu in 8', published in Antwerp by Ioach Trongnaesium, 1605, with 'Residentiae Athlonienis Sotis Jesu' written on it. Includes typewritten copy of the above letter.

Letter from Dr Matthew Gaffney to Fr Alfred Murphy SJ. States that he has already sent faculties for Fr Kane SJ and that he grants them for Fr M[ ]. Suggests that Murphy comes [to Mullingar] early that month.

Letter from Dr Matthew Gaffney, Bishop of Meath, to Fr James Murphy SJ. Refers to news the latter had sent him; that he had ceased to be rector of Tullabeg, and had been made Provincial. Thanks him for his recognition of his ‘friendly feelings towards the Society’, and declares that Murphy’s ‘fraternal relations’ with his (Gaffney’s) priests was a source of comfort to him.

Letter from Dr Matthew Gaffney, Bishop of Meath, to Irish Fr Provincial James Murphy SJ. Expresses his sorrow at the news of Fr [Alfred] Murphy’s death. Due to an attack of lumbago he will be unable to attend the funeral.

Letter from Mr Francis Shaw, Belsize House, Mullingar, County Westmeath to Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ reporting on his visit with Dr Quinlan and his advice for Shaw's future studies. Remarks that he has talked the matter over with Fr Ryan who advised convalescing for another month at home and to go to Tullabeg for another month to prepare for his examination in Philosophy and to then return to Bonn.

Letter from Patrick Walter Shaw (father of Fr Frank Shaw SJ), Belsize House, Mullingar to Fr Laurence Kieran SJ expressing his joy at his son's improved health. Remarks that the trip home will complete his recovery.

Letters from Fr Leonard Sheil SJ to the Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ and his Socius, Fr John Coyne SJ seeking permission to visit his brother’s widow and children. His brother was killed in the war, 1945.

A file of letters from S. P. Redington, solicitors concerning the estate of Fr John Errington SJ. Refers to the will of George A. Nicolls (Fr Errington was named, amongst others, as one of the beneficiaries of this will and ultimately came to inherit the estates in Kildare and Westmeath. George A. Nicolls died without issue and his estate passed to his brother Archibald Dowdell Nicolls. The latter also died without issue and the estate was inherited by Fr John Errington SJ).
