A file relating to the paintings in Rathfarnham Castle. Includes letters relating to the ceiling paintings by Angelica Kauffman and new decorative works. Includes letters from Joshua Clarke, J Clarke & Sons, Stain glass manufacturers & Church decorators, 33 North Frederick Street, Dublin regarding the ceiling painting by 'my lady artist' (Miss Crilly, later known as Margaret Clarke) (10 September 1913). Only one painting by Margaret Crilly was accepted, which disappointed Joshua Clarke. Initially Miss Crilly rejected the offer of £7 10 shlllings per painting. Joshua Clarke persuaded her to accept £7, but by this stage, it was too late. She received £10 for her painting and Cambridge & Co. Ltd, Dublin were engaged (October 1913), and agreed a price of £35 for the series of nine painting. The artist Patrick Tuohy completed the ceiling paintings.

Letter from Edmond Downing SJ, Loreto Abbey, Rathfarnham, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning an item published in the 'Irish Citizen' concerning remarks he made during the course of a lecture. Remarks that he wishes to address the situation and asks permission to do so.

Letter from Victor G SJ, Constantine, 55 rue Serigny, Algeria to Fr David Gallery SJ thanking him for his letter but cautions him against using the address and putting SJ after his name. Remarks 'You put my Superior in boiling water..now in several of our domiciles any letter bearing the name of Reverend Pere etc.is returned unopened to the sender...Just as present we are hunted by the detectives of the sectarian government to be taken as delinquent or rebelious [sic] to the law in reconstituting a community'. Continues 'We don't pass for Jesuit anymore, we are diocesan missionaries'. Remarks that the Bishop ordered him to Biskra to help out the priest who had fallen ill. Remarks that the heat was unbearable and he was relived to return to Constantine.

Letter from Rev. George O'Neill SJ, 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning an article written by Fr Phelan about Canon Sheehan. Remarks that the article was sent to him as a reader for the Catholic Truth Society ‘I reported strongly against its publication thinking it lamentable from many points of view. The other reader and the Hon. Sec. were equally unfavourable.’.

Letter from Fr Thomas A Finlay SJ, 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning the deed of purchase for the site of University Hall. Remarks that it cannot be found but that it may be in Gardiner Street. Suggests that the Provincial should make a strong room available so that all of the property deeds can be kept safely.

A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Clongowes refused to pay the principal sum or the interest Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Rector, Fr James Corboy SJ, Mungret College remarking that he has instructed Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector of Clongowes to pay £332.15.4 to Mungret. Remarks that Fr General decided that Clongowes should pay half the interest due on the debt and '…put an end finally to all disputes about the debt.' (25 June 1917, 2pp).

Letters, telegrams, memoranda and notes relating to Belgian refugees in Ireland. Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

Includes letters concerning Fr Joseph Wrafter’s nomination as chaplain to prisoners of war in Holland, a move contested by the Provincial who saw it in effect, as ‘putting him (Fr Wrafter) on the shelf’ (26 December 1917 – 15 January 1918, 3 items).

Information from the Commonwealth War Grave Commission suggests this never happened. Includes birth certificate for Jeremiah Austin Hartigan.

A file relating to the will of Philip Francis Little. Bequeaths £50 to the Society of Jesus. Includes a copy of the will. Remarks in a postscript 'I do not include my dear brother the Rev. Robert J. Little SJ under any benefit in my will. Professing as he does the holy virtue of poverty, it is useless conferring benefit upon Robert of which he can not avail. (23 September 1916, 3pp). Includes telegrams to Robert Browne, Bishop of Cloyne (14 March & 25 August 1919) concerning Fr Browne & circular letter from the War Office to Fr Browne, St Francis Xavier’s, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin, informing him of his appointment as an Honorary Chaplain to the Forces 3rd Class ‘as from 1st Sept. 1921 on which date your commission as a temporary Chaplain to the Forces ceased to have effect.’ (14 September 1921).

Remarks 'I thought on last Christmas night at the midnight mass that the reception of the vows of devotion was a kind of safeguard against having to be in doubt as to the Religious Life being my path home.'

Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier’s, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Fr Patrick Connolly SJ concerning a poem written by Fr Canavan. Praises the poem but remarks that it cannot be published.

Letters from Fr Richard Campbell SJ, Rathfarnham Castle, County Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas Nolan SJ, concerning accounts, and Fr John FX O'Brien's belongings and asks that they remain in Rathfarnham. Remarks that the men working at Rathfarnham delivered an ultimatum to him and went out on strike (15 March [ ], 2pp).

Letter from Mr Edward J Coyne SJ, Rathfarnham Castle to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ concerning a rockery constructed by the Jesuit Juniors. Remarks that they would like to place a statue of the Virgin on the rockery and asks for Fr Nolan's help.

Letter from Rev. George O'Neill SJ, 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning Fr Provincial’s objection to Scholastics continuing as committee members of the English Society at University College. Remarks ‘This Society fulfils an exceedingly useful function in the college. It exercises its members in three most useful things...writing...reading them out...(and) criticizing each others work.’. Continues ‘I fear that their (the Scholastics) withdrawal from active participation...would simply mean its extinction.’.

Remarks that she was then offered a job on '...Fine Ghaedheal by my former "boss"...Bob Brennan and we are working together very harmoniously linking up the Irish race. Our Free State friends are...trying to smash us as they would smash the Republic and every Irish institution but we are going come out on top in spite of them.

• letters from Madame Chaponniére-Chaix, ex-President, International Council of Woman, Geneva, Switzerland (16 December 1922-26 January 1923) to ‘My dear President’ (of International Council of Woman, Lady Aberdeen, Aboyne, Scotland). The first letter (written in French) comments on the potential for a Red Cross mission to Ireland (16 December 1922). The second letter (written in English), refers to a letter received from Miss O'Brennan, through the Peace and Freedom League, regarding a visit from the Police at Dr Lynn’s Hospital and the arrest of Miss Mary Comerford. Madame Chaponniére-Chaix doesn’t believe that the time is right for a Red Cross mission to Ireland (26 January 1923);

• copy of note ‘Projet Hayes Humanity Dublin’ which refers to Madame Chaponniére-Chaix and the establishment of the Red Cross in Ireland (In French), (nd.);

• leaflet entitled ‘The extreme penalty’ which details the words of Mr Eamon Aylward in relation to his involvement in disturbances in Kilkenny "The extreme penalty”: Mr. Eamon Aylward, in the document with his signature attached which has been found upon an irregular captured by the Kilkenny force, has lighted up, as by a lightning flash, the criminality of the militarist attack upon the people...but that such an order could be issued by a man blaspheming the honourable name of Irish Republican will reveal to the people the tyranny that they have escaped (1922);

• letter from Richard Mulcahy, Commander-in-Chief, Oglaigh na hEireann, Dublin to Miss Margaret MacNeill, Industrial Schools Office, Government Buildings apologising for keeping ‘those papers so long’ and ‘that the Red Cross people have been suitable replied to’ (25 January 1923);
