Fr Ffrench's letters were written in his capacity as English Assistant to Fr General. As a result all of the letters have an official slant. Fr Ffrench, SJ died in Rome on 31 May 1873. Thanks him for his recognition of his ‘friendly feelings towards the Society’, and declares that Murphy’s ‘fraternal relations’ with his (Gaffney’s) priests was a source of comfort to him.
