The entries relate to Church, community and school matters and events. The comings and goings of various members of the community are recorded, as is their state of health. Visits by bishops, the Father Provincial and other guests are also reported. Arrangements regarding meals and the consumption of alcohol (wine and punch) are dealt with extensively, and references to the ‘Long Table’ appear often. There are also references to the cost of provisions, including food and cigarettes and the weather. Building work, maintenance and repairs are recorded. Monies received for masses and donations are recorded. Many entries relate to feast days and special periods in the Church calendar, e.g. Holy Week and Christmas, and include information such as arrangements made for Masses, other ceremonies and confessions for the public and the community. In relation to the school, entries cover term dates, timetables, holidays, half days, examinations and results, retreats, school tours, sports fixtures and results, sports days theatricals, concerts, debates, sodalities etc. Of the many insertions in these journals, some are glued in and some are loose, and they relate to, amongst other subjects, distribution of holy communion, timetables for the celebration of Mass, novenas, Holy Week arrangements, concert programmes etc. Contemporary national and worldwide events are sometimes reported, e.g., ‘assassination of President Kennedy at about 6.30 p.m Irish time. Correspondence between Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ, Fr John MacSheahan SJ, Rector, St Ignatius, Galway and Thomas O'Doherty, Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh relating to the authority of the Bishop in insisting that the acts and five minutes sermons are connected, and limiting the number of Masses said at St Ignatius. Refers to the university sodality question, and Fr O'Dea mentioned that he didn't bring it to the Bishops attention (Canon Davis).

A file of letters from Dr Thomas Youens to Fr Charles Aylmer SJ concerning the mission on the Isle of Man. Dr Yovens was appointed by Dr Briggs to visit the Isle of Man and assess matters following the death of Fr Gahan and to arrange the opening of the new chapel in Douglas. Includes a letter informing Fr Aylmer that he has full permission from the Bishop (Dr Briggs) to bless the new chapel in Douglas and perform divine service in it (28 February 1837, 1p). Includes a letter expressing the Bishop's wish that the mission of the Isle of Man pass into his own hands. Remarks that he does not know who the Bishop has in mind to take over the mission (27 April 1837, 3pp). Includes a letter relating to the sum of money paid by Dr Briggs to the Society of Jesus in respect of the Isle of Man. (16 May 1840, 1p).

From Fr Charles Aylmer SJ, writing from Douglas, Isle of Man, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Refers to books being shipped to and from the island. Reports that he has settled all accounts, including money owed to Mrs Wilson and Dr Youens, and has prepared the way for the new incumbent. Refers to taking out administration to the will and the transfer of the Society’s property, on which two points he awaits instructions. Mentions the Catholics on the island, and their attendance at Mass. Adds that there are rumours that the privileges of the Isle of Man are to be withdrawn, and that it will be united to one of the English Northern Counties.

From Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, writing from Tullabeg, to James O'Shaughnessy. Replies to the latter’s enquiry in relation to Fr Gahan’s will, and also with regard to the agreement to Bishop Briggs to give £800 to the Society in compensation for their property on the Isle of Man.

Remarks 'We all disliked the proposal (that all Sodalities pass a resolution) supporting his position intensely, but felt that we must yield to the Bishop's wishes.'

The Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice is an agency of the Irish Jesuit Province, dedicated to undertaking social analysis and theological reflection in relation to issues of social justice, including housing and homelessness, penal policy, environmental justice, and economic ethics. Established in 1978 by a small group of Jesuits living and working in Ballymun, on the northside of Dublin city, the Centre was intended to promote social justice and critically examine issues of structural injustice and poverty.

The Centre was founded in 1980, when Ireland was in the midst of serious economic recession, unemployment, and emigration.

All that lot or parcel of ground with the dwellinghouse and offices now standing thereon situate on the east side of Gilford Road, Sandymount in the Barony of Dublin in the County of Dublin, bounded on the north-west and south-west by Gilford Road and Sandymount Green, and on the north and north-east partly by the holding of James Beckett, partly by the holding of Susan and Louisa Hempenstall and partly by an unleased portion of the estate of the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery.

Terms and conditions:
In pursuance of an agreement dated 13 November 1939, between James R. Smyth of St. Andrews, Serpentine Avenue, Ballsbridge in the City of Dublin and William J. Kavanagh of 57 Merrion Square in the City of Dublin, builders on behalf of the Purchasers, and by which Mullan agreed to the sale to the Purchasers for the sum of £2,925 of the above premises for all the residue of the term of 150 years set down in a lease of 1870, and consideration of the said sum paid by the Purchasers to the Vendor, the latter, as personal representative of James Johnston Mullan, deceased, assigns and conveys unto the purchasers the above property, to hold for all the unexpired residue of the term of 150 years, subject to the rent of £125, and to the covenants and conditions in the 1870 lease, and subject to the sub-leases set out in an accompanying schedule.

Byrne, lessee, partly by the holding of J.W. Beckett and others, lessees, and partly by the holding of L.H. Ormsby, lessee, on the east partly by the holding of J.E. Byrne, lessee, partly by the holding of J.W. Beckett and others, lessees, partly by the holding of L.H. Ormsby, lessee, and partly by another portion of the holding of J.E. Byrne, lessee, and on the south by another portion of the holding of J.E. Byrne, lessee, with the messuages and buildings erected thereon

Terms and conditions:
In consideration of the expense incurred by the lessee company in the erection of the eight messuages upon the above property, and of the several rents and sums of money reserved and made payable in the present lease and the covenants and agreements made by the lessee company and conditions, the lessor, by virtue and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the will of 20 May 1904 by the Right Honorable Sidney, late Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, and by the Settled Land Acts of 1882 to 1890, and with the consent of Lord Herbert, demises unto the lessee company the above property to hold from 29 September 2019 for the term of 72 years, paying the yearly rent of £126, and also paying during the said term the several additional contingent rents or weekly sums set down in the lease. The lessee company also undertakes to abide by the several other conditions laid down in the lease, including the construction of two roadways with footpaths, drains and sewers, and also the erection of 34 additional messuages or dwellinghouses, with all necessary cartilages, garages, out-buildings, offices, walls, fences, sewers, drains etc. The lessee company to pay to the lessor the yearly rent of £45.

Charles Doyle appears to be a serial conman (at one stage changes his name to Edward Gerard) and Charles Kennedy corresponds with fellow family members in Ireland and abroad, priests in the UK and Citeaux, France and reformatories about Charles Doyle’s criminal behaviour and imprisonment in Austria, the U. S. and France. Chief Baron Christopher Palles was a brother-in-law of Charles Doyle.1872-1899;

John Henry Newman, Rector of the Catholic University, Dublin regarding an offer of the Professorship of Archaeology at the University. Remarks ‘...I would gladly accept (it), if the term does not mean more than I could honestly undertake.’. Explains that he is working under a Royal Commission as a co-translator of the Brehon Laws and also with the Irish Archaeological and Celtic Society, to translate and edit an ancient Irish Law Tract, the Battle of Moylena.
